HOW DO APPLICATIONS WORK?
We release applications for new programs several times a year. You can view a full list of upcoming programs and dates HERE, and if you are interested in being notified about the date of the application launch, you can sign up for our travel program mailing list (located at the bottom of the travel page) for program preregistration, early bird announcements, and exclusive opportunities.
The applications for the LIGHT GREY ART LAB RESIDENCY PROGRAMS differ from our other travel program applications. These programs require a written application, statement of intent, proposed community workshop, and more information about one's practice and process. Applications are reviewed as they are received, and a secondary interview / Skype conversation may be scheduled so we may get to know each applicant a bit more. Artists-in-residence are chosen based on their proposals, their background and the mix of practices present on each team. More information about this process can be found on the travel info page.
The applications for LIGHT GREY ART CAMP / LIGHT GREY ART CAMP INTERNATIONAL CULTURE TOURS are easy to fill out, short, and will ask for information about the applicant and their interest in the program, dietary restrictions, special requirements, or travel buddy arrangements. Applications are filled first-come, first-served, and we will contact each person as the applications are received to inquire about their registration and payment plans. Due to the intimate nature of our programming, we are unable to reserve a spot in the programming until the first installment of the registration payment has been received, so we will ask that interested applicants respond as soon as possible to the acceptance email so we can guarantee a position in the program.
If we do not receive a response to the acceptance letter within a reasonable time frame, we reserve the right to pass on the opportunity to someone on the waiting list.
HOW DO I PAY FOR THIS?
Of course, the easiest way to secure your position is to pay in full, which completely reserves your spot in the program and means you're fully registered. There is also an option to pay in installments (a first reservation installment of 1/2 the program cost, then two smaller 1/4 payments over the next two months.) We send individual invoices to each person via Shopify so you can pay with whatever method works best for you, and it sends you an official invoice for your records. All payments paid through Shopify will include a 2.9% shopify fee.
All participants using the payment plan must complete their payments on time, and in full within the two-month window in order to be fully registered for the program.
ALL TICKET SALES / PAYMENTS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE, so please make sure you've checked the dates / times / details before registering. As always, we require full payment to book reservations for each participant's lodging, museums, special lectures and other programming on our travel trips, so in order to complete the booking, we require the invoice to be paid in full. Partial payments will be forfeited and the position will open up to another individual on the wait-list if an interested person does not complete their payments within the two-month payment plan window. Special cases may be made upon request for alternative payment plans, but these are subject to approval by the Light Grey team.
Registration paperwork, introductions to the travel team, and corresponding content for the coming programs will be sent to all participants upon registration and the Light Grey staff will be available to help coordinate at any time.
Please remember to purchase travel insurance! We know that this is a big investment and travel insurance not only will reimburse you if you have to cancel for covered reasons, but will also support you for any medical reasons, property loss or damage, delayed or cancelled flights, or other inconveniences.
I HAVE FOOD ALLERGIES, IS THIS A PROBLEM?
We try our best to accommodate those with food allergies. On many of our trips, we provide family-style meals and will checkin with each participant about their needs before the trip. When we travel abroad in a land where the language is a bit different, it may be difficult to find alternatives to some foods and in a few cases we may not be completely confident in knowing precisely what may be in some meals. In this case, we will make a special note on the program page to highlight what participants can expect and often we will have an a-la-carte option, where participants will purchase their own food during the program.
There are some programs (for example, our Southern Japan program) where we will be exclusively eating out. In cases like this, participants can certainly find options on the menu that will fit their needs. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask and we can give you more information on what may be available.
WHAT KIND OF ACTIVITY LEVEL CAN I EXPECT?
We walk a lot. In some cases, we'll be out in the field for nearly 8 hours per day. The programs are all about wandering, exploring, experimenting, and we will usually post an "activity level" blurb on the program page so participants can know what to expect. As a general rule, it's important to remember that most of our programming is outdoors, and about being in nature, so a moderate amount of activity will be present at a minimum.
Please take note that because we will be walking a lot, it is important that you try to prepare for a comfortable journey. We suggest taking walks before the program, breaking in good shoes before arriving, and noting your personal level of mobility and how to best accommodate your personal needs before the journey.
WHO CAN APPLY / WILL BE TRAVELING WITH ME?
We welcome creatives from all backgrounds and locations to join us on our adventures! The Light Grey Art Lab travel programs are crafted with creatives in mind, so many of our excursions will be to places where we can learn from experts, sketch on the go, see great artwork, and learn from one another in our various practices. If you are not a creative but enjoy the theme, don't worry, you'll feel right at home!
All participants MUST be 21+.
I WAS TOO LATE, CAN I BE ON THE WAIT-LIST? ALSO, HOW DO THE WAIT-LISTS WORK?
Yes! If you're interested in joining us but didn't have the opportunity to apply when the program was live, feel free to send us a note to firstname.lastname@example.org and we can add you to the program wait-list! If a position opens up, we occasionally will email the travel mailing list to notify applicants of an opening, but would be happy to reach out in the event another spot opens up!
People on the wait-list will receive a notification if a position opens up in the order that they were put on the list. If no positions become available and we are offering the program in another set of dates we will contact the individuals on the wait-list to see if they'd like to apply for the new dates. They will be given priority on upcoming trips, and the remainder of open positions will be open to the public soon after.
HOW DO CANCELLATIONS WORK?
Tickets and payments made to our programs are non-refundable, so please make sure you are 100% that you can join us before registering. The reason we can not refund your ticket is that all of our reservations for lodging, transportation, etc. must be made well in advance and we count on a full participant list to run our programs at cost, and can not be reimbursed for the cost of these programs with our hosts.
You are welcome to try to find a person on your own to replace your position and can contact us so we can help get the new person officially registered. The only programs where we can not accept stand-in guests are the Residency Programs.
We highly recommend getting travel / trip insurance so you are reimbursed for any unforeseen illnesses, weather, missed flights, etc.
WHAT IF I NEED A TRAVEL VISA?
Light Grey Adventure Programs LLC is a travel business. Artists attending the residency or any art camp programs are a tourist and should acquire the appropriate documentation for their nationality and destination. If you need a visa for the program, please reach out to your travel agent. Light Grey Art Lab and Light Grey Adventure Programs LLC are not liable for providing travel documentation.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THERE IS A TSUNAMI, EARTHQUAKE, OR SOME OTHER HORRIBLE UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCE THAT PROHIBITS THE TRIP FROM HAPPENING?
Once again, this is where travel / trip insurance is ESSENTIAL. Light Grey staff members will have their own individual plans, but you will need to look into personal travel / trip insurance to cover the cost of any natural disasters or things of that nature.
Travel insurance can be purchased from places like AAA or Squaremouth.com and are relatively inexpensive. It offers you protection, peace of mind, and will cover any losses of equipment, personal items, medical emergencies, and interruptions to your trip. We will always recommend this to all of our participants before traveling!
ARE THERE SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE?
Residency programs offer work-study scholarship applications on a sliding-scale for artists in need or emerging artists, awarding up to $800 of credit toward the program cost. Work-study scholarships are given to individuals interested in helping out during the program. Usually the duties include assisting with meal preparation, helping during workshops and assisting artists / guests with lectures, setting up materials or spaces, and helping us keep things tidy. If a scholarship is available, information on how to apply will be noted at the bottom of the individual travel program application page.
WHAT IF I HAVE SOME CONCERNS ABOUT MY HEALTH?
It is important that you make us aware of any health concerns you may have so we are prepared to assist you if need be. If you have any issues with mobility, health concerns that may affect your enjoyment or participation in the activities listed, please let us know in advance. We will try our best to help accommodate any concerns when possible, but if we are unable to guarantee your safety or enjoyment due to a health concern, we will reach out to you as quickly as possible to discuss alternative options for those activities.
We require all participants to fill out a Hold Harmless and an Emergency Contact Agreement, which asks that all participants acknowledge that they are fit able to participate in the proposed activities and are aware that Light Grey Art Lab is not liable for illness, injury, loss, or damage of property. Your enjoyment and the safety / security of the group is our top priority.
CAN I TRAVEL WITH MY FRIENDS?
We would love to help you share accommodations with your friends / loved ones! If you are interested in traveling with someone you know, please put their name in your application at the bottom in the "interested in traveling with another." They MUST fill out their own individual application to be considered, and since our space is limited, you may want to coordinate efforts!
If you have any roommate requests, please feel free to let us know!
WILL THE PROGRAM FOLLOW THE EXACT ITINERARY SHOWN ON THE TRAVEL PAGES?
We write the agenda for each trip as an example of the things to come! Our intention is to follow the schedule to the best of our ability, but we will occasionally make adjustments on the fly to accommodate the pace, activity level of the group, or accommodate for interesting weather. We reserve the right to help craft the best possible experience for our teams, so we will let you know if anything is being adjusted so you can plan accordingly. Light Grey Art Lab reserves the right to adjust travel itineraries in order to provide you with the best experience possible!
Light Grey Art Lab, travel assistance, and guides reserves the right to take photos, videos, and document the experience for promotional materials, social media, promoting future programs, archiving the experience, or commercial use. We also provide a database after the program for artists to access the photos captured on the trip for artists to share.
I NEED HELP GETTING TO OUR RENDEZVOUS LOCATION!
Don't worry! We'll send everyone an email filled with essential information and can help you get safely to our first meet up spot! Each program is a bit different, so we will make sure to get in contact with you after you've registered to provide you with any help you need to coordinate flights / get to where you need to be!
After the completion of the Light Grey Art Lab travel program, artists are encouraged to share photos, artwork, and memories from the experience. Our Light Grey Art Lab Iceland Residency Programs and Norway Creative Residency are followed with an exhibition and reunion at Light Grey Art Lab’s brick-and-mortar space in Minneapolis, MN. Our exhibitions also exist in a permanent online archive at lightgreyartlab.com
We welcome returning artists! We often travel with artists two or three times in different programs. If you are an artist interested in traveling again, helping out, getting involved on a deeper level, or donating, please send us a note: email@example.com
I HAVE OTHER QUESTIONS!
We are happy to help! Please feel free to send a note to firstname.lastname@example.org and we'll get back to you as soon as possible!
Light Grey Art Lab is a gallery, classroom, and event space in Minneapolis, MN. Since opening in 2012, Light Grey Art Lab has exhibited the work of thousands of illustrators, designers, and makers from around the world. As the host of collaborative exhibitions, educational classes, visiting artist workshops, publications, and interactive content, our mission is to connect creatives across mediums and backgrounds, while making it easy to collaborate, share ideas, and grow the creative community.
In 2014, Light Grey Art Lab introduced a series of creative adventure programs that provide various opportunities for artists to travel and explore their creative practice in an environment with other makers. These programs allow artists to meet other creatives from various industries while challenging their personal practice. The programs include opportunities to partake in artist-led workshops, chances to learn about the land, mythology, geology, culture, and landscapes in spaces outside our home turf. Currently, we offer the Light Grey Art Lab Iceland, Norway, and Costa Rica Residency Programs, Art Camp International Programs (including Greece, Ireland, England, Japan, and Scotland), and Art Camp programs through various US National Parks and Minnesota State Parks.
