TOGETHER RESIDENCY EXHIBITION
The Together Residency Exhibition, brings these artists back together (in spirit) to make work in response to their experience of travel and togetherness. The exhibition includes large format photographs, limited edition prints, original paintings, and mini zines or books. The diversity of style, use of color, and format is a perfect representation of the residency dynamics -- bridging artists together from seemingly different worlds.

The show includes epic illustrations of basalt rock formations, Norwegian quilting designs, plein air paintings, travelogues, photographs of the landscape, horses, and homes, and much more. The collection highlights the physical wonder of being in a space outside your own. We are all stuck at home at the moment, but having the creative power to dream beyond our own backyard, make something that showcases the places and people that inspire us to make.

Light Grey Art Lab has been an arts organization in the Twin Cities for 8+ years and we’ve hosted countless exhibitions, projects, and workshops for creatives, folks of Minneapolis, and the greater community.  Each summer, we put on the Light Grey Iceland and Norway Residency Programs, where we bring together artists from various backgrounds and professions to explore, get to know one another, and have intense, artist-led workshops about creative practice, business, inspiration, and much more.

DAYDREAMS BY LISSY MARLIN

The Daydreams collection includes stunning, colorful, and experiential images of traveling through Japan. From riding the train in Kyoto to standing beneath the electric-colored ginkgo trees, the magical plum garden around Osaka Castle to scenic views of Mount Fuji, these illustrations capture a sense of sublime, wonder, and excitement. The limited edition prints are embellished with gold foil details.

Lissy Marlin is a Dominican Illustrator with a simple mission: bring a little bit of magic to everyday life, one piece of art at a time. In previous years, she played the role of Lead Artist at a toy company called GoldieBlox, a small start-up in San Francisco. Presently she works as a freelance illustrator from her home in Philadelphia, illustrating children's books and fun middle grade novels such as Neil Patrick Harris's The Magic Misfits series.

The Daydreams collection is inspired by my travels around Japan, the show Daydreams reimagines the beautiful sights I've been lucky to see among the different seasons of the year in the land of the rising sun with a little touch of magic. I've created the pieces of the show thinking of bringing a bit of color and hopes of what is left of 2020, and welcoming 2021 with a brighter, more positive outlook for everyone.

QUIET PLACES BY DARIA DANILOVA

The Quiet Places collection includes beautifully illustrated postcard sets with kraft paper envelopes and editioned prints. The works include illustrations of bookshops, quiet moments, and autumnal scenes.

Daria Danilova is a self-taught illustrator, a maker, and the founder of a stationery shop called So Quiet. Her work is deeply inspired by slow living, nature, silence, thoughts, and dreams. She is passionate about drawing warm scenes with muted color palettes and handwritten typography. Daria's work has been applied to a wide selection of projects including book illustration, licensing, editorial, and much more. She was born and raised in Russia but currently lives and works in Wroclaw, Poland.

"Silence is not empty. It's full of answers" -  I like this quote. I believe everybody needs a quiet place where one can dig deeper into thoughts and emotions. From reading books to observing the night sky – a little solitude into an overfilled schedule is the core of this series.

Through my illustrations, I want to remind viewers that such a quiet place can be found everywhere: in the forest or by the river, in a small cafe or a bookshop, in a park or at home, and most importantly – inside yourself. It's so easy to get lost in the noisy world, and, as an artist, I hope to encourage viewers to take a break, treasure ordinary, and not let go of the things they truly love doing. Being alone is important and beautiful. And I believe that creating such a quiet time for yourself could be the key to finding the answers to big questions.

Together, Daydreams, and Quiet Places all open December 4th, 2020 and will remain on display through January 16th, 2021. Due to the safety of guests, we will not be having a traditional art opening, but visitors can come any date throughout the duration of the show. Work will also be visible on the virtual gallery on the website and online shop (shop.lightgreyartlab.com). The exhibition is free and open to the public.

LIGHT GREY SALE:

In addition to the gallery shows and display, Light Grey Art Lab is hosting an online art sale with prints, gift baskets, postcards, and books. Imagination is a beautiful thing, so let’s imagine infinite worlds together. We’ve all seen shows where someone gets a hold of a time machine, stumbles into a portal, or steps into an alternate reality generator, and the main character is tossed into space, unlike anything they’re used to. Rick and Morty, yes. Bill and Ted, exactly. Futurama. .Star Trek. . . what would it look like if the fabric of our world was tossed into a bag and randomly assigned -- would we survive, thrive, find a new way of life?

We built a time machine -- a worldbuilding randomizer that includes four essential design categories: Ecosystem, Resources, Important Attitudes or Attributes of the People, and Imagined Time Period (Age of Darkness, the Blight, The Long Sleep, etc.) Each artist used the randomizer to create a fictional world inspired by their four prompts and got to work creating -- designing a new landscape, a totally different planet, a different outcome, changes to our resources, species, animals, etc. We are so proud to put these illustrations together to talk about the process of worldbuilding, but beyond that, all of the beautiful and complex ‘ways of life’ that we can imagine.

LGAL Fundraiser Sale + Exhibition by Kelsey King

  • Fri, Jul 17, 2020 8:00 PM 20:00 Sat, Aug 8, 2020 9:00 PM 21:00
  • Google Calendar ICS

It would be an understatement to say that the last few months have been abnormal. The pandemic, the isolation, the huge changes in our daily operations and routines, and the important and powerful changes rising in our city. March feels like an eternity ago, and all of us have learned the values of flexibility, adaptation, and change for the better -- we are hopeful and excited to see what is on the horizon.

Light Grey Art Lab will be opening back up to the public after months of closed doors. We have two very special projects in the works, the Isolation Exhibition by Kelsey King and the Light Grey Art Lab Fundraiser Sale. Join us during gallery hours July 17th- August 8th, as well as our online shop, to support local artists, consignors, and our own gallery as we navigate these tough times.

Recessions often hit those who are already struggling and deemed ‘non essential’ first, and there has been a huge strain on the creative community, individual artists, and those who are running their own businesses. Light Grey Art is hosting a fundraiser sale featuring published projects, donated art prints, postcards, zines, pins, patches, and originals. All of the funds from the sale go towards keeping the lights on as well as assuring that all of our events can remain free and open to the public. All items of the sale are under $20 and many are under a dollar. We are excited to open back up the doors and say hello.

Light Grey Art Lab has been a community arts organization in the Twin Cities for eight years and we’ve hosted countless fun exhibitions, projects, and workshops for people to get involved in. We have worked with thousands of illustrators, concept artists, children’s book illustrators, designers, and artists of all types to collaborate, exhibit, and discuss creative practice. In addition to physical projects, Light Grey Art Lab hosts travel programs, international art camps, visiting artist workshops, tarot classes, and more. We appreciate the support!

Isolation Exhibition  is an ongoing series of landscape paintings created as a practice of reflection and self-care in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The series began as Kelsey King, along with the community, started to understand the severity of the outbreak and entered stay-at-home orders and remote teaching practices. This drastic change in environment, left Kelsey feeling detached and isolated from her personal, professional, and artistic community.

Kelsey King has created an acrylic painting every day since lockdown (March 15th) and has currently created over 120 original works. All of the paintings feature various landscapes such as local public land, Northern Minnesota and the Boundary Waters, MN State Parks, Norway, Iceland and other spaces.

“These paintings started as a daily routine that served to distract me from constant scrolling and news updates and focus my energy on something that brought me joy. They became, as days at home grew longer and the full scale of the magnitude of the crisis settled in, a form of reflection upon my experience with isolation. These landscapes- sometimes vast, sometimes intimate, but always empty with no signs of human life - are all moments in my life where I have turned to nature to find excitement, awe, and feel connected to the larger world around me. At these times, being isolated doesn’t feel like pulling away but a chance to appreciate connections in a different way than I do during times of normalcy.” - Kelsey King

Kelsey King is a freelance illustrator and educator located in St Paul, Minnesota. Her work often features animals, typography, pattern, and elements of the natural world with occasional touches of humor. For years she has focused on working digitally in a style focused on color, shape, and composition. In contrast her paintings often have a tighter reference to realism, though both styles tend toward solid strokes of solid color to suggest form and space. This project has been the first time she has focused on painting traditionally in almost a decade.

May 22nd, Light Grey Art Lab is hosting a digital exhibition to recognize the works of graduating artists on an international platform. This project is open to graduating Spring 2020 artists receiving a visual arts degree. SENIOR SHOW 2020 is not only about celebrating their newly created work and commencement, but connecting the artists with the global creative community!

The exhibition is a giant virtual gallery of the world’s collective commencement exhibitions. We have made it very easy for students to participate in the digital gallery by asking for a single virtual exhibition installation applied to one of the walls in the Light Grey Art Lab exhibition space in Minneapolis. This project is designed to give the students a chance to install/curate their work, similar to a commencement exhibition and envision their collection on display. Graduates will then have their work virtually exhibited alongside their peers from schools around the globe in an effort to provide the visibility and connection they deserve at a time like this. The digital exhibition will launch May 22nd, 2020 and will be promoted through the month of June. The galleries will be available for viewing on the Light Grey Art Lab website, featured via social media, and through promotions from our media sponsors.

Curio: Iceland and Norway Residency Exhibitions
Friday, July 5th from 7-10pm at Light Grey Art Lab
Free and open to the public

We shared a space, hiked along rocky trails, brainstormed over warm food, chatted about life, our creative dreams, personal growth, and opened ourselves to new experiences, camaraderie, and friendship. We experienced thoughtful workshops and beautiful moments throughout the program. In celebration, Light Grey Art Lab is hosting an exhibition of both the Iceland and Norway artists-in-Residence side by side - CURIO.

We have reunited our Artists-in-Residence with the teams they travelled with in order to create collections of work based on their experiences together. Moments in the landscape, emotional connections, and artistic discoveries, all presented in curated, collaborative mini-exhibitions. Please join us to celebrate and take in these glimpses of Iceland + Norway!

Your intuition is an amazing ally! The ways we can recognize potential opportunities, the signals we pick up when meeting new people, and our ability to recognize patterns in what is happening around us are all directly related to our fine-tuned ability to sense subtleties subconsciously in our day-to-day.

Your intuitive abilities can be harnessed to help understand your actions, your ambitions, and past reflections. This week, we will be introducing the concept of reading intuitively with the Tarot. Join us in practicing how to identify subconscious themes in your own life and how to use Tarot as a guide for further self exploration.

This week's workshop will be broken into several sections: Learning to read Tarot intuitively, Symbolic Exploration, Understanding Strengths & Weaknesses, and Analyzing Dreams with Tarot.

Instructor, Lindsay Nohl, will be leading this week's workshop in Intuitive Tarot and we will be discussing methods for identifying symbols, themes, and stories within the cards, as well as learning new spreads for self-reflection and self-exploration from guest lecturers, Katt Weyers, Hannah Jerrie and Calvin Bauer.

This workshop is one in a series of Tarot workshops / meet-ups at Light Grey. Look for more upcoming Young Mystics classes and related make-and-take workshops this year! We plan on hosting some study groups, related get-togethers and more for people looking to explore their mystical side.

•••••

Tarot is mysterious --- with it's esoteric symbolism, loaded imagery, archetypal characters, and taboo connotations. This workshop will explore the different ways of using Tarot, and how to decide the best way to approach using Tarot to enhance your self-understanding.

This workshop is for beginners AND practiced readers and is an opportunity to revisit one's practice amongst like-minded folks and to introduce new reading techniques.

We’ll practice reading with a few new spreads in class, so participants can practice their new knowledge with others!

•••••••

This class is open to beginners and beyond - anyone interested in discussing the symbols and stories within the Tarot should stop by!

THINGS TO BRING:
Bring your deck or use one of ours!
Bring a notebook and writing utensil to take notes!

This event is open to the public, so feel free to bring a friend!

Small Art for a Big Cause: Charity Exhibition featuring 99 Artists
“Moments from Other” by Em Allen
“Reflections” by Maggie Chiang
“Various Works” by Vanessa Gillings

This December, Light Grey Art Lab will be hosting around 99 artists in a charity show, with money going towards four causes that we and the creative community hold dear: people, the environment, aid, and animals. These artists will be donating one 8x10” piece each, which will be featured and sold through the Light Grey Art Lab Instagram and with a cut of each of the sales going towards one of the following:
ACLU, The Wilderness Society, American Red Cross, and The Humane Society of the United States.

We will also be featuring a selection of these works within the gallery for people to peruse and purchase. Along with the charity show, we will be featuring collections of work by Maggie Chiang, Em Allen, and Vanessa Gillings. The exhibition runs from 7-10pm, with a very exciting Game-Show-meets-Artist-Q&A starting at 9pm.

We hope to see you here!

ABOUT THE EXHIBITIONS AND ARTISTS

Small Art for a Big Cause
In the season of giving, we know that each of us can have a greater individual impact in the world around us. This December, we are hosting an exhibition which we hope will raise awareness of how much we can do to support the things we really care about.
We know the impact of social media is massive. It's become easily and endlessly shareable, and accessible from just about anywhere. We want to use Instagram (our primary social media platform) to spread the word and help support organizations that we feel are contributing to a better, healthier world.

Through Light Grey Art Lab, 99 illustrators from around the world will be taking time to support these things that are dear to us: people, animals, humanitarian aid, and the environment. Each artist will submit one 8x10” illustration, some of which will be featured and sold in-gallery, and all of which will be featured and sold through the Light Grey Art Lab Instagram. Cuts of each of the sales will go to one of the following charities: ACLU, The Wilderness Society, American Red Cross, and The Humane Society.

Moments from Other
Minneapolis-based illustrator Em Allen's upcoming exhibition, Moments from Other, is a selection of works that explore the fantastic: from stories about ghosts and clubs run by immortal cat girls to diving into the end of the world and back. Every illustration is a glimpse into a reality other than our own, where characters of all kinds live and breathe life into their respective moments. Whether it's a climax frozen in time or a snapshot of the fantastical day-to-day, these works are meant to feel like a departure from our world and a step into the Other. This collection will include original works and prints, which will be available in-gallery and online.

Reflections
Illustrator Maggie Chiang’s collection of work, titled Reflections, presents a beautifully textured, mysterious, and surrealistic examination of natural spaces and internal recollections. Drawing from “the personal struggles and emotions that [she] experienced throughout the year”, Chiang has used these works as “a way to escape from reality”. This collection will be primarily original watercolor and acrylic works.

Various Works by Vanessa Gillings
The work of Vanessa Gilllings captures a warm, inviting fantasy world where animals and humans cohabitate in cottages, cozy storefronts, and mystical forests. Gillings uses patterning, gentle lines, and traditional materials to create this soft and whimsical world. This collection will be comprised of original works, which will be available in-gallery and online.

Opening Reception
The opening reception and artist talk for Small Art for a Big Cause, Moments from Other, Reflections, and Various Works is Friday, December 14th from 7-10pm. At 9pm, we will begin our Artist Q&A meets Game Show featuring the 3 featured artists: Vanessa Gillings, Em Allen, and Maggie Chiang. With the artists on the hot seat, we’ll learn all we’ve ever wanted to know about the art-making process… What’s your late-work-night guilty pleasure jam? What’s your secret power-self-care routine? The Light Grey Game Show Hosts will ensure that all will be fun and informative, so stick around for this special experience!

The show is free and open to the public. It will remain on display through February 1st, 2019.

"The Work of Awakening "by Christina Mrozik
"Souvenirs II "by Bene Rohlmann

Light Grey Art Lab’s upcoming exhibition features two contemporary artists whose work is informed by nature, visual patterns, and texture. Both have an extreme attention to detail and stunning images influenced by their personal experiences. The opening reception will be October 26th beginning with an artist talk and Q&A, followed by the reception and artist meet and greet, and party.

The opening reception will follow and includes the two solo collections, artist signed prints and wares, spooky music and refreshments, photo booth (patrons encouraged to dress up for Halloween!) and a retrospective of Light Grey Travel programming and events.

We hope to see you here!

ABOUT THE EXHIBITIONS AND ARTISTS
Christina Mrozik has spent the majority of her life observing the natural world and the various relationships within it. Drawing from the external, Mrozik uses a combination of flora and fauna, occasionally adding prose, to parse the complexity of our inner worlds. She primarily makes drawings, often composed from watercolor, graphite, acrylic and ink, and has recently delved into the world of ceramics.

“This body of work was created while moving through the mental solitude of a year of loss and reckoning and into a space of quiet healing. Merging pieces of organ, flora and animal, these drawings are an attempt to capture the “haunted” feeling of inaccessibility, expressing an experience outside the clarity of language. The work was my way of asking the unanswerable questions reeling in my mind: How do I reintegrate the body when it has been separated from rationality? What are the edges that separate pain from empathy? What is it to witness your own unraveling, a part of you painfully aware of what’s happening, yet not accept it as your whole self?” - Mrozik

Souvenirs II
Bene Rohlmann was born in 1985 in Germany. After receiving his illustration diploma in Münster, he moved to Berlin in 2010, where he has worked full time as an artist and illustrator ever since. He has worked for clients such as The New York Times, Google, The New Yorker, Facebook, Rolling Stone, Variety and many more and he has shown his art in numerous exhibitions throughout Europe, Mexico, USA, South Korea, Australia and Singapore.

Bene Rohlmann’s work includes multi colored risograph prints, signed print editions, original illustrations and drawings, incorporating animals, graphic symbols, and cultural motifs, work inspired by travels through Europe and South America. These tactile, patterned, and ornate images create a sense of curiosity and intrigue.

“I consider my works as souvenirs, that I am bringing home from traveling through my mind and imagination. Even to myself, the person who finds them, it is often unclear where they are coming from exactly. The only thing I know for sure is, that I love exploring that world and showing you what I have found” -Rohlmann.

ON DISPLAY JULY 6th - END OF AUGUST

This year is a huge milestone for Wizards of the Coast as it marks Magic: The Gathering's 25th anniversary! Whether you discovered veteran game designer Richard Garfield's masterpiece early in life, or came to it recently, many of us have developed visceral memories and heartwarming experiences centered around the game. And this summer, Light Grey Art Lab along with 100+ artists, pays tribute to the creatives, epic creatures, powerful artifacts, mystical enchantments, and wanders that course the history of Magic: The Gathering and fantasy games.

MAGIC: THE GATHERING 25th Year Anniversary Exhibition
It is no surprise that Magic: The Gathering has become one of the most enjoyed tabletop games on the market and features one of the most beloved fantasy worlds of all time. This tribute exhibition celebrates the worlds, visceral memories of playing the game, and encounters created via the captivating world within the cards visualized through the work of 50+ international creatives.

Paintings, illustrations, framed digital works, and inspired pieces pay homage to some of Magic: The Gathering’s unique lands, worlds, monsters, characters and the act of playing the game. This exhibition is not just about the visuals, experiences and friendships that have emerged from the game, but references some of the original contributors, content, and artists that made the game what it is today.

THE ULTIMATE FANTASY: Building worlds and making games can be fun, but it's no joke. Game artists pour endless time, creativity, blood, sweat, and tears into the worlds they create to facilitate exciting adventures, engaging design, and memorable experiences! Opening Reception, April 27th from 7-10pm
Foodies: An illustrative postcard + original exhibition about the things we eat
Synesthesia: scents and memories, curated by Rafael Mayani
On display at Light Grey Art Lab through May 20th
118 East 26th Street Suite 101
Minneapolis, MN 55404

Join us on April 27th for the opening reception of two exhibitions about the food, tastes, smells, and feelings of home. These two exhibitions include over 100 illustrators, designers, creatives, bakers, and writers from around the globe - blending senses and sharing some of their favorite home cooked meals, family recipes, and memory. More details about the opening reception and events coming soon!

Foodies: Each artist is created a limited edition set of illustrative recipe cards based on their favorite dinner dishes! They celebrate recipes of their household, ingredients from their region, guilty pleasures, and comfort foods - it is all about food and the things we enjoy making. In addition to the postcards, the exhibition will display the framed original food illustrations and be celebrated through artist interviews, features, podcasts, and more.

Synesthesia, curated by Rafael Mayani, is about the blending of olfactory senses, visuals, and experience through the eyes of twelve international artists.
"Certain scents can transport us to a specific time and place, which will be completely personal to each individual. For me, the smell of cigarettes usually reminds me of the teacher’s room from my primary school, and a specific brand of car freshener reminds me of the house I lived in when I spent a year in high school as an exchange student in Canada. But my favorite memories are the ones that catch me off guard. Sometimes it takes a while to figure out what it is exactly, but it’s really incredible how a specific smell can evoke memories that we had completely forgotten about." - Rafael Mayani
