BOWER BIRD: CALL FOR ARTISTS!

Our December Show -- Call for artists! Bower Bird: an exhibition about curating & collecting

Our December Show -- Call for artists! Bower Bird: an exhibition about curating & collecting

You are on your belly, deep in the rainforest. Your thin grey hair blows to one side and your khaki shirt is smeared with a mixture of sweat and stains from your time in the underbrush.

Inches away from your face: a bell-shaped structure stands behind an array of carefully placed odds and ends. A pile of green beetle wings, blue petals from the nearby flowering shrubs, three grey tail feathers, and stack of thin, cream-colored mushrooms.

You talk quietly with your charming british accent to the camera man.

"Inside, we see one of the most unique curators of all... the Bower Bird."

****

You are at home after a long day of work.

David Attenborough is sitting silently behind your sofa, just inches from your face as you unpack your Amazon Prime box.

He whispers to the camera man.

"Here, our subject repeats a practice perfected by centuries of evolution. It's called.... collecting...  Let's watch."

He leans in, ancient nostrils chirping, as he watches you pull a copy of Sam Bosma's "Fantasy Sports" from the box and page through it.

Satisfied, you stand up and put it gently on your book shelf between your copies of Bryan Lee O'Malley's "Scott Pilgrim" and Wren McDonald's "Cyber Realm."

You take a step back, frown, and adjust the titles in alphabetical order.

Yes, that's much better.

"Ah, a delightful collection indeed..."

***

Bower Bird
An exhibition about curating & collecting

Opens December 4th, 7 - 10pm
Light Grey Art Lab
118. E. 26th Street #101
Minneapolis, MN 55406
612.239.2047

We are looking for eccentric curators, secret stash-ers, and individuals with impeccable taste to show us what they've got. Our December Exhibition, Bower Bird, reveals the nature of what we prize, what we display, and what we collect as artists.

We want to know what the inside of your fridge door looks like, what's on your desk,  and what sits inside that locked box underneath your bed. What's up with that stack of books your grandpa gave you? And that zip-lock bag full of ticket stubs? How about those 30 black t-shirts you own, what're those about? Reveal your souvenir rock collection, the soda-cans that you've stashed so gently the front seat of your car, or the collection of sexy texts you've kept over the years. We'd even like to see what kinds of flowers you've collected in Skyrim.

The internet says that a collection can be defined as :
"a group of objects or an amount of material accumulated in one location,
e
specially for some purpose or as a result of some process:"

We like that idea. Whether you were a knowing collector or not, we want to know what you have more than 4 of, and we'd like to see it.

And like it, or not, our collections are loaded -- signaling to others about who we are, or what we are perceived to be by the nature of what we like, and what we've amassed.

For the month of December, we are are looking to display the things you display to the world.

AND, to celebrate the idea of collections even further, we will be asking all participating artists to send their collection image as a limited edition run of 100 post-cards. Each participating artist will receive a complete stack of postcards from the Bower Bird exhibition (one from each artist involved) before the holidays and the remainder will be for sale at the gallery for the duration of the exhibition, as well as available as prints, for those interested. #1 of each collection will be displayed in our brick-and-mortar gallery in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

We are looking for Illustrations, paintings, photography, or anything else you think would help describe the nature of your collection. You are welcome to draw a line-up of elements in your junk drawer in a scientific manner, or paint a i-spy environment where we have to look for it, or even use typography to list the titles of your favorite books on Mount Everest. Maybe draw your shoe and label all of the scrapes and holes from epic kick-flips, climbing through the forest with friends, and when you bailed from your bike the other week.  Whatever your inventory is, we'll be looking for you to find the best way to describe it!

***

The schedule & other details.

We will be closing the call for art Friday, September 25th, and announcing the participating artist list by October 1st and emails will go out to all participating artists with resources for printing, details about the exhibition and more.

Postcards will need to be mailed to the gallery by November 13th, and the collections will be shipped out by December 4th's opening reception.

If you'd like to be a part of the exhibition, submit your name, email and links to your website or blog below by FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25th!

Light Grey Art Lab in headed to Iceland!

We are currently packaging our bags, sketchbooks, and hiking boots as we embark on a creative journey through Southern Iceland. The Light Grey Team is prepping for two weeks of adventuring, artist-led workshops, and collaboration for the Light Grey Iceland Residency Program! We will be leading artists through some of the most sublime, active, and unusual landscapes on earth. They will experience glacial ice, volcanic rock, basalt columns, lush vegetation, costal animals, and microscopic lifeforms. As we explore together, we will also share our creative expertise through conversations, workshops, and on-site sketching.

During our travels, we will be unplugged from our normal daily life. It will be a chance to make artwork, share with on another, and grow as creatives. You can follow along with our travels as we post the Light Grey Podcast, send updates from Iceland, and share photographs.

2016_WORKINGIMAGE_applicationsInfo

Big News! The application for the Light Grey Iceland Residency 2016 is now available! If you are interested in traveling with us for next year's program, please check out all of the details and submit your application on the Light Grey website here!

We are looking for diversity in industry, location, backgrounds, and creative workshops! This year, we also have the ability to open up two scholarship opportunities for artists who may need financial assistance to make the trip possible. If you have additional questions, feel free to send us a note: hello@lightgreyartlab.com. Applications are due August 30th.

Guts all over the walls! Recap of the GUTS exhibition opening reception.

Guts Opening Reception
Thanks to everyone that came by for the GUTS opening reception!

Hey! Thanks to all the awesome artists and visitors that made the GUTS opening a huge success! We had gorgeous weather, an awesome feature in the City Pages A-list section (Thanks so much, Jessica Armbruster, for the shout out!), and slew of people wanting to come out and dissect all sorts of topics with us!

Featured Artist, Lana Crooks, came out for the event in full force, staying to eat donuts and chat on the podcast with us. I have to say, it was an incredible time in the days leading up to the exhibition when we watched everything come together all at once.

Take a peek at all the photos from the night HERE!

CALL FOR ART: PATCHES & STITCHES

Patches&Stitches_1000px
Join us for our July exhibition: Patches & Stitches! CALL ENDS APRIL 5th!

EDIT: 4.6.15 -- Thanks, everyone, for submitting your names to our Patches & Stitches show! We'll be announcing the final list of participating artists shortly!!

There are two sides to every story, two faces on each coin.

You don your jean jacket, flip up your hood and step out the side door into the street. You run through the alley, too quick to let the puddles splash your legs. The buzz of the neon signs is comforting. Their colorful reflections bounce off the wet pavement. As you get closer to 8th street you see a trio of silhouettes through the haze and as you approach, your eyes scan the large dark canvas squares on the backs of their jackets. The familiar raw edges, the phrases inked onto the dark patches with home-made screens, lovingly hand-stitched between their shoulders... It's your crew alright.

•••

Patience is a virtue for a night's watchman. Your footsteps echo against the cold stone floors of the East Wing. You look up at the large, intricate wall hangings as you pass. Epic scenes dance across the fibers of the antique tapestries. Your candle is burning low but you can still make out the stories of love, treasures, battles... the sigil of the kingdom proudly embroidered at the corners of each piece. You run your fingers over another image, small french knots and tight stitches bring a lion's mane to life and the whiskers extend outward into the space you share. Light from the flame dances over the small glass beads of his eyes...

PATCHES & STITCHES
Opens July 3, 2015
7 - 10pm
Light Grey Art Lab
118 E. 26th Street #101
Minneapolis, MN 55404
612.239.2047

This July we're wrenching the raw side of D.I.Y from the refined and putting on a show that celebrates the tactile nature of textiles.

With the choice between the sick and the sweet, participating artists will have the chance to show in one of our two exhibitions.

Patches is our bad ass show. We are looking for the dark, limited color, gritty, screen-printed, hand-painted, embroidered and dyed patches. We want artists that can can make a patch so sick we can't stand it. One we'll have to immediately stitch to our jackets and pledge allegiance to your crew. We are looking for clever takes on the imagery we all know and love - maybe phrases we can't resist. We want to feel a bit dangerous, deviant, or defiant. Any kind of printing or embroidery is fair game for this one. Chenille patches are cool. Letterman patches are great. Pins, badges, studs, stitches, let's do it.

Stitches is our beautiful show. We are looking for new takes on an elegant craft. We'll flourish in the flora and fauna, the intricate needlework, the knots, beading, sequins and appliqués. We're looking for vibrant, colorful pieces that challenge our ideas of old-school embroidery. Reinventing the classic expectations of one of the world's oldest textile techniques. We want to see your cross-stitches and woven wall hangings come to life and we want to feel luxurious, lavish and lustrous.

If you are interested in making original work for one of our upcoming sister-shows, put your name, email, links to your site and your preferences in the comments below like this by APRIL 5th! :

SPECIAL NOTES:
Call ends April 5th and the final list of participating artists will be announced the following weekend!
** We are asking for originals and editions for this exhibition (so that means that all participating artists will have to send in their work by June 10th if accepted.) We are looking for one-of-a-kind pieces, but are VERY interested in limited editions of patches, badges, and embroidery kits or artist created series. More information about parameters, shipping and the exhibition will be provided at the close of the call for art! Please feel free to ask if you have any questions! hello@lightgreyartlab.com

CALL FOR ART : COSMOS

Cosmos_callforart

EDIT: 3.16.15 -- Thanks to everyone that submitted their links for this call for art! WOW! It'll take us just a bit to wade through all of the awesome entries - sit tight and we'll be announcing the final list of participating artists shortly!

CALL FOR ARTISTS!

There are 88 modern constellations in the sky, suspended amongst incredible natural phenomena that shape worlds beyond our own. Billions of people have looked up at the night sky and wondered about their place in the universe. Oracles used the stars to predict events to come and constellations became beacons that could guide travelers across uncharted territory. The night is full of glittering reminders that we may not be alone in this universe. For eons the cosmos have held great significance in countless civilizations, and in the month of September, Light Grey Art Lab will turn out the lights and look to the skies.

612.239.2047
hello@lightgreyartlab.com

Let's recreate the magic of our universe together. From all 88 constellations and astral phenomena to the planets in our own solar system... We'll light up the night!

We are looking for artists that want to look deep into the astrology, the mythology and the metaphors that have shaped our knowledge of each of these stellar bodies. Each artist will receive one of the 100 astral bodies at random and a template showing it's position in the sky. We'll cover the gallery with an incredible maze of illuminated beasts, gods, stories and legends and we'll let viewers experience the ties between what we actually see at night, and what we see in our minds eye.

And to top it all off, we will be printing a limited edition astrological oracle deck to accompany the exhibition -- where you'll learn how to chart your own astrological influences, intuit messages from the alignment of the stars, and divine wisdom from the Cosmos themselves!

We are planning all sorts of star-gazing activities leading up to the opening reception including some really incredible experiential get-togethers centered on the sky. More details about our schedule of extracurriculars will be posted soon!

So! If you'd like to be in charge of shaping our universe as we know it, put your name, links to your work and your email below by March 12th!

A full participating artist list will be posted in the week following the close of the call for art and an email with dates, constellations and astral bodies and specifics about the show will be provided to everyone soon after! CALL FOR ART : GUTS

Guts_Callforart
A revealing new group exhibition with featured artist, Lana Crooks

CALL FOR ART!

2.27.15 EDIT : THANKS A MILLION, GUYS! WE'VE CLOSED THE CALL FOR ART AND WILL BE JURYING OVER THE NEXT COUPLE DAYS! WATCH FOR AN UPDATE SHORTLY!

GUTS
What lies within?
Opens April 17th
7 - 10pm at Light Grey Art Lab
118 E. 26th Street #101
Minneapolis, MN 55404
612.239.2047

Put on your x-ray specs and let's turn this exhibition inside out.

We are looking for artists willing to school us on the inner-workings of some of life's little mysteries...

Part exploration, part education, part evisceration -- we want to know what's really underneath the surface. So dust off your field guides, scalpels, and stay-at-home taxidermist's manuals, and join us for an exhibition that peels back the skin of all of the subjects you've ever wanted to know more about.

"How powerful is human curiosity and is it strong enough to get you to open Pandora's box?"

"What really happens to your body when you swallow a sword?"

"Who is buried in Grant's tomb?"

"What does a Midway albatross eat?"

"Where is the threshold between human and Borg, and where does my bionic grandfather lie on the spectrum?"

"How much hatred can I store in the four chambers of my heart?"

...

IN OTHER WORDS: What lies within?

Artists are encouraged to take creative liberty when helping us understand some of these incredible biological concepts. Think of it this way; if history is written by the victors, and truth is stranger than fiction, what happens when we make visual artists our surgeons, our scientists and our scholars?

During the month of April we're looking for ways to turn what we thought we knew inside out. Artists will line the walls of with "scientific findings" so intriguing, fascinating and obscure you won't know what's real and what's not? Let's leave the viewers scratching their heads.

In honor of our inside-out topic, we've invited special guest, Lana Crooks, to join us as our Featured Artist for the exhibition. With her incredible scientific sculptures and skeletal structures, she was a perfect fit for our April exhibition! She'll set the pace with imaginative pieces based, but not confined, in reality. Think of it like visual creative non-fiction.

So, whether you're interested in the bizarre skeletal structure of bats, or hypothesize about how the effects of faith often keep India's devout hindus from contracting illnesses from the sacred, but polluted, Ganges river, or if you want to help us visualize the weight of the soul, throw your name in the hat and prepare to drop some wisdom on us.

If you're interested in joining us for our GUTS, put your name, links to your portfolio and your email below by February 25. Artists will be announced the following week!

CALL FOR ART : BOSS RUSH

boss-rush-graphic2
You've survived wave after wave of enemy forces... You have just enough energy and precious few supplies to last through the final stages. The music quickens and you have a sinking suspicion that the checkpoint you just past was the last one for a very long time. Can you survive the final boss rush?

EDIT 1/12/15 : THANKS TO EVERYONE THAT SUBMITTED! WE'LL BE ANNOUNCING THE FINAL LIST OF PARTICIPATING ARTISTS SHORTLY!

BOSS RUSH!
Battles with the bad guys
Opens Friday March 20, 2015
7 - 10pm

at Light Grey Art Lab
118 E. 26th Street #101
Minneapolis, Minnesota 55406
612.239.2047

We are looking for artists interested in preserving their favorite climactic videogame moment in our newest exhibition BOSS RUSH!.
Think of all of those console games -- from NES to Atari Jaguar to PS4. PC games, arcade classics, MMOs, ... any and every kind of game you've played, and any and every kind of boss you've encountered...

While we may not always admit it, everyone loves the bad guy. Years after the closing credits roll on our favorite videogames, memories of classic boss encounters like Psycho Mantis, Kefka, Ganon, and Pyramid Head live on in infamy. Light Grey Art Lab’s newest exhibition, BOSS RUSH!, celebrates our love/hate relationship with the bad guys.

A Boss Rush is the nail-biting series of battles against the game’s previously defeated bosses before facing the grand finale. It’s the penultimate test of skill and reflexes, and a reminder of all the obstacles you’ve overcome. In BOSS RUSH!, dozens of artists will be creating work to celebrate the most vile, treacherous, or misunderstood enemies in history’s most memorable videogame battles.

The opening reception will be March 20, 2015 at Light Grey Art Lab!

****************

If you are interested in creating a piece for our upcoming March exhibition, put your name, email and links below in the comments section by January 5th! Participating artists will be notified by email of all of the details of the show within a couple days of the call for art closing! As always, participating artists will have their work displayed all along the walls at Light Grey Art Lab for the month of the show as well as permanently archived on our online gallery!

AND! SUPER SPECIAL NEWS!
The show won't end there!
We've been invited to take this show on the road! (Well, just a stone's throw down the road!)

GLITCHCON has invited us to showcase the best of the best pieces during a special, limited time exhibition at GLITCHCON on Saturday March 28th!

Guest jurors (TBA!) will be taking a sneak peek after all art is submitted and awarding 10 pieces a special honor prior, which will be awarded at GLITCHCON.

Iceland 2015 : Artists in Residence

Team Moss - ICELAND 2015 Residency Program

Congratulations to our 2015 artists in residence!
After a long deliberation and many incredible applicants, we've put together two exceptional teams for next year's Light Grey Art Lab Iceland 2015 Residency Program.

In the summer of 2015, two diverse teams will join us as our 2015 artists in residence. Our July 25 - 30th group welcomes a team of illustrators, concept artists and painters from different areas of the United States, Canada, and Austria. Our July 31 - August 5th group welcomes a team of animators, directors, illustrators, cartoonists and book makers and from different areas of the United States, Canada, France and the United Kingdom. We will be traveling through Southern Iceland to visit some of the most secluded, wild, and sublime locations in the world. Our day excursions will include visits to some of the creaking glacial feet, boiling mud pots, hidden waterfalls, haunted hillsides, sleeping volcanos, basalt caves, and more. Equipped with our sketchbooks, cameras, and hiking gear, we set out on an adventure of a lifetime to explore, document, collaborate-- we hope to create an atmosphere of learning, open exchange, and dialogue.
