Spring Equinox: A Six Card Spread

1.jpeg.jpg

Today is the spring equinox, a date that marks the first day of Spring. The equinox is an occurrence that happens twice a year and marks the date on which the sun crosses the celestial equator, causing the amount of daylight and darkness to be the same. This is a day that represents new beginnings and balance, and following the full moon in Libra last night, we are now resting in a powerful time marked by a need for balance and harmony. This is a time of beginnings, as this day marks a new astronomical year and a transition into Aries season. The equinox’s are historically very ritualistic days, making today a perfect time to look inward with a tarot spread - but first, let’s look a little bit deeper into the history and significance that comes along with the equinox.

The spring equinox is representative of the return of light, as all of the days that fall after the spring equinox but before the fall equinox are longer than the nights. New seeds are planted, new ideas comes to light, new paths open up, and all things brighten. Historically, this day was charted, tracked, and revered in many cultures. This date was often greeted with rituals involving cleaning out old energy to make room for the new. This is why the equinox marks a perfect time for spring cleaning of physical space, energy, and emotions. This makes for a perfect time to start a new endeavor you have been contemplating for a while, or to revive an old idea you cannot seem to shake. It is important to acknowledge, reflect, and begin to look forward when the seasons change. After all, this is the day when the light overtakes the darkness that has ruled it all fall and winter.

This 6 card tarot spread comes from Crystal Bar Blog, and is created specifically for the spring equinox. It is set up in three sections.

Cards 1-3 represent rebuilding, 4-5 represent learning to rebalance, and card 6 represents rebirth. These are the themes for the rows of cards, but each individual card has specific meaning assigned to it as well. That said, let’s begin the reading.

CARD 1

This first card is is one of acknowledgement - recognizing where you are at this time. The card we have in this placement is Canes Venatici in reverse. Canes is representative of partnership and collaboration, but since it has appeared in reverse, it is likely that it is representing a breach of trust. Perhaps within a romantic relationship, a friendship, or even a business partnership, someone in your life has crossed a boundary. There have been some trust issues, and one or both parties have, unfortunately, let the other down. If someone has broken your trust, consider the possibility that they do not realize they have done this. Try to explain to them how you truly feel, and how exactly their actions were not ok with you. Clear communication is the most helpful thing to have during times like this. Try to release your fear in relation to this specific topic, and clearly share with the other, or others, your true feelings.

CARD 2

Card two represents accepting where you are currently at, and recognizing what changes you need to make. Here we have the Lovers card, as well as Cancer. This card speaks to loved ones and connection. Matters involving the home, family members, and friends hold much importance at this time. Perhaps the breach of trust that we discovered in the first card is between you and someone else who lives in your home, or exists in your close circle. At this time It would be best for you to focus your energy on these important relationships as you move forward into the new season. Putting a sympathetic and loving energy forward would be beneficial to all people involved with you, and trying to understand the hurt behind people's actions while clearly explaining to them how those actions sometimes breach your boundaries will bring positive change. This situation may be in motion in order to teach you to be a more loving, caring and understanding person. Try your best to love others this spring, and to see things through the lens of their personal reality. If you want them to see things the way that you do, look for a way to properly communicate what the situation is in your personal reality.

CARD 3

Card three will shed light on a new path for you, and let you know where you will need to adapt. Corona Borealis is placed here, and this card is representative of triumph after hardship or sacrifice, as well as new beginnings. This is a perfect card to have here, as the energy that the equinox brings forth is very similar to the energy that this card is alluding to. When this card appears, it is a sign that love will find its way here. This is a new beginning after a time of heartache. You are now able to move forward in the new and refreshing energy of the spring. You may have had a very hard time with someone that you really care about, something happened and they acted in a way that has hurt you. Maybe you do not know if you will be able to trust this person again, even if you still care about them. Proceed with love in your heart and on your mind and it will find a way through. Perhaps you are the one whos has breached the trust, and if this is the case, it is even more important that you proceed with a loving energy. The situation will work out exactly how it is meant to in divine timing, and things are about to get better for you. Stay true to your heart, listen to and follow your emotions, and get ready to begin again. Love will be triumphant over all else here.

CARD 4

Card four speaks to advancement. Here we have the card Comet, a card that’s all about fate. This comet is a sign of fate - a signal from beyond yourself that your wishes are going to come true. This is a card of hope, faith, and trust. Have you been putting all of your faith, or lack thereof, in yourself and yourself alone? Have you been putting all of your faith into another person, possibly the one who let you down? To move forward, it may be time for you to put your faith in something beyond yourself. Trust that things will play out how they are meant to, and try to go with the flow. Everything happens in divine timing to help bring you closer to your life purpose. Trust in the universe to get you to where you need to be, when you need to be there. Ask the universe to give you signs that you are making the best choices and going in the right direction.

CARD 5

Card five represents retreat  - things that you may need to step back from. Vulpecula is representative of a sly person who may be deceiving you. This could be referring to one of the people referenced earlier in the reading that has breached your trust. Look at the people who are surrounding you at this time, ask yourself how they make you feel. Are the feelings associated with these people generally more positive or negative ones? Do you feel safe and comfortable with those around you at this time? Who appears in your mind when you think of feeling uneasy and unsafe? Whoever comes to mind in a negative light when asking yourself these questions are the people that you should begin to take a step back from, or to question why they may be so significant in your subconscious. Perhaps this encompasses the majority of people in your life and you need to step back from all of your relationships to get a clearer picture of where you stand. Perhaps you are the one with alternate motivations that you are not consciously recognizing. Healthily withdrawing from your relationships at this time is recommended, as it will give you more insight on what relationships you want to nurture and bring love to, compared to what connections you may need some time away from.

CARD 6

Six is a card of renewal, and represents who you will become this spring. Coma Berenices is a card of minor sacrifice for something important. In reverse, it specifically speaks to promises made in the past, and the time to live up to those promises is approaching. Although the aforementioned trust that you had was broken, living in the spring with love and honor can potentially restore what was lost. Think it through, then proceed to carry out what you know is right, with honor. Perhaps you recognize that you owe somebody an explanation, one that comes in love and sympathy. Maybe you need to ask for someone's forgiveness, and maybe you will have to accept that it might take more time for that person to give it to you. If you truly love them, you will be able to accept and understand this. Once again, trust that all things will play out in divine timing, exactly as they are meant to. This spring you are going to become much more contemplative, and you are going to learn about where debt is owed and where sacrifices must be made for the good of all. Maybe you are the one who needs your own forgiveness - maybe you are the one who needs an explanation and loving understanding from yourself. Perhaps you have breached your own boundaries, and even resent yourself for it. Now is the time to come back into trust and alignment with yourself, and the rest of the universe. There seems to be a bit of work for you to do this spring. What was in the dark is now emerging, and it is now the time to work through these things in the light.

Thanks for joining us! Hope your Equinox brings refreshing energy and positive progression - or at the very least, lovely weather to lift your spirits. Check out the Cosmos Tarot and Oracle here, and keep an eye out for more posts on here and the Cosmos instagram!

Full Moon in Libra: A Five Card Spread

thumbnail.jpeg

Tonight will be the full moon under the sign of Libra. Libra is the astronomical sign that represents justice, intuition, equilibrium, and most of all balance. Full moons are seen as powerful and important occurrences in the metaphysical community. As full moons occur monthly, the full moon is a perfect time to reflect and look forward with a tarot reading. The spread we will be reading is specific to the full moon in Libra, and comes from Noble Lion Prints. Please check out their blog if you get the chance!

The Libra card from the Cosmos Tarot has been placed in the center of this spread intentionally. We purposely put this card here in order to better channel the essence of libra. If you have the Cosmos tarot and want to try this spread for yourself, consider placing it here as a sort of theme card. If you want to do this spread but do not have the Cosmos Tarot deck, the card The Chariot will do, since in the Cosmos Tarot, Libra and The Chariot are one and the same. You can also place an item here that represents balance and harmony to you. Anything can be used for this - for example, you could use a crystal, or plant, or a personal item that you feel carries the essence of equilibrium.

Card 1 :

In this placement we have Andromeda, the devil card, showing you the ways in which you have lost touch with yourself. Upright, this card tells of Andromeda’s freedom - the ability to break away from limiting habits and patterns that promote stasis. Have you been listening to your inner guidance, or have your harmful thought patterns taken you over? This card showing up here may mean that you have lost touch with the part of yourself that is free. Whether you were conscious of what you were doing or not, you have likely gotten yourself into a pattern of self-oppression. You have stopped listening to your freedom, and are trapped in limiting, fearful thoughts. Could this be because you do not trust the part of yourself that wants to act in pure freedom? Are you afraid of what you may have to let go of in order to become completely free? Andromeda is showing up to let you know that it is time to reexamine the relationship that exists between your thoughts, actions, and freedom. It is likely that this relationship within yourself is way out of balance, and severely lacking harmony.

Card 2:

Here, we have the card Wormhole for what you are projecting onto your relationships right now. This card is about trying to discover what exactly connects your soul to the souls of others. However, it also speaks to shortcuts and an easy way out. Perhaps you are trying to find this shortcut, perhaps you believe that people in your lives are taking the easy way out. The placement of this card asks you to pay attention to the way you are viewing interpersonal connection. Do you think someone in your life is trying to take the easy way out? Or, in actuality, could it be possible that you are the one who is trying to take this shortcut? Could you be using this projection of the other person trying to take a shortcut, as a shortcut or escape for yourself? It may be helpful to contemplate where this idea comes from, and why you have assigned it to your relationships. Going back to the first card, could this projection be a form of self-oppression that you practice in order to preserve yourself and prevent growth, and eventually freedom?

Card 3:

In this placement, we have Sextans and Octans representing the old wounds that are healing at this time. This card appearing here indicates advancement in education and understanding. Though old wounds have made you feel lost and confused before, those wounds are now closing, those feelings now fading. This is a perfect time to begin investing in learning about something you hold interest in. Taking a class or finding a mentor is advised at this time. As your wounds close, what has been keptin the dark will start to come into the light with this full moon. Maybe you have felt that you did not have the resources in the past to truly achieve your freedom, but that does not mean you will never be free. It is time to look forward with a lighthearted attitude and a critical mind. It is finally time for you to understand why you had to go through whatever hurt you so much, and through this understanding your wounds will begin to heal.

Card 4:

In the placement that stands for what you need to let go of or move on from, we have Grus in reverse. Grus, the crane, represents longevity, commitment, and the eternal. In reverse, this card can be pointing to something brand new in your life. Maybe you have gotten yourself into a new partnership, taken up a new hobby, or moved to a new place. Maybe you have not done any of those things yet, but you have been thinking about it. Now is a time to let go of fearful thoughts relating to commitment. It may be hard let go your worries about whether or not things will last, or if it is even worth your energy if it is not going to last forever, but if order to restore internal balance you are going to have to let go of some of these things. Enjoy the moments as they come, and trust divine timing to take care of the rest. Just because something may not last, that doesn’t mean it is not worth doing and enjoying. These are things to think about and recognize if you are looking to embrace your freedom and personal truth!

Card 5:

Finally, we have Taurus reversed, standing for the outcome regarding this full moon in Libra. Taurus in this deck is also The Hierophant. This card speaks to systems set in place, ones that are hard to work around, and keep you from moving forward. You are at an impasse thanks to the authorities that you continue to submit to, despite knowing that they keep you from what you really want. Think about what this reading has shown you about your current level of harmony. Your fearful thoughts have drowned out the sounds of our freedom, making it easy to make “practical” choices that are not in your best interest. Maybe you want to avoid conflict, and that is why you continue to submit to the tradition and systems in your life. Maybe you are convinced that these systems fulfill a need of yours that you could not possibly have fulfilled by anything else. The best advice for you now is to turn your attention inward, to try and reconnect with the part of yourself who longs for freedom, and to listen to and respect that part of yourself. Try to speak with this element of yourself out of love and understanding, rather than fear. Listen to your inner freedom and trust in it’s guidance; perhaps this will help you to manifest more options of escape from this place where you are currently stuck. This will help you begin your journey back to internal harmony.

We hope you enjoyed this reading - tomorrow we’ll be posting a reading for the Spring Equinox, so stay tuned! Also keep an eye out for more tarot content in the future, and check out the Cosmos Tarot and Oracle deck here!

We also have an instagram for the Cosmos deck - you can find that here!

Artist Interview with Zoe Keller

Meet Zoe Keller. Zoe is a freelance illustrator known for her realistic, intricate, and nature-inspired illustrations. Zoe is originally from Upstate, New York, attended school at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, and is now living and working in Portland, OR. In 2015, we have had the opportunity to work with Zoe on multiple occasions including the Guts exhibition, the upcoming COSMOS exhibition and tarot deck, and traveled together during the Light Grey Art Camp to Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park!

It is always a pleasure to work with Zoe, and we have the honor of presenting some of her work and process in the interview below. You can read about her inspirations, workspace, artistic practice, and thoughts on making!. You can also look at all of Zoe's work on her website, blog and Instagram. Be sure to also keep an eye out for her work in the COSMOS Tarot & Oracle Deck later this month too!

Hey Zoe! Could you tell us a little about your workspace? Any studio necessities, rituals, collections or best practices?

Over the past three years I’ve been moving every few months and have carved out studio space from whatever was at hand. Usually I had a desk, but there were definitely periods of holding a drawing board in my lap on the floor. I just moved to Portland, OR, a couple of months ago, with the plan of staying put for at least a year and putting down some tentative roots, so I’m also being more intentional with my studio space than I have been in a long time. I have a big desk that’s all mine, and my reference books (for drawing), maps (to look at while I listen to the news) and collection of rocks and feathers and flotsam and jetsam (for general nerdery) are all close at hand. My studio space is in my bedroom, though, I would love to move my work space out of my living space soon!

Keller 6 - Studio.jpg

Would you mind sharing a bit of your process with us- I’m curious how you work from initial ideas to these incredibly detailed illustrations? What research goes into your work?

Research is a big part of my process. I like having some constraints when I go into a drawing; or example, I might only draw animals and plants that are endangered in the state of Oregon or stick to drawing flowers that grow on this one tract of prairie in the north-eastern corner of the state. These boundaries make a blank page more approachable, and also mean that I can step away from a finished drawing with a deeper understanding of the natural world, which is really the biggest reward. I go from research to small sketches to light under-drawings, then work from top left to bottom right finishing the drawing, and finally go back and adjust lights and darks across the whole thing.

Your work is clearly inspired by the natural world, what brought about that fascination? What keeps that fascination going?

I have a lot of memories of being outside with my parents, looking at salamanders, frog eggs, and bugs. That fascination never went away. I also think that this moment in time - as our planet faces a man-made mass extinction - is an especially important one to explore how incredible the natural world is. I hope that my work can do a little to make people realize how fantastically, fragilely diverse the life on our planet is.

For the Cosmos Exhibition you were given the Moon. Can you give us some insight as to how you approached this subject?

I wanted to know how, if at all, the moon impacted other species. Through some Googling I found a couple of articles linking the reproductive habits of particular amphibians to the full moon. How cool is that?

In your career, do you ever run into major obstacles? (Artist's block, lull in clients, bad work / life balance) Do you have tricks for overcoming any of these things?

All the time! As a pretty anxiety-riddled, pessimistic person, I definitely don’t have a temperament that naturally lends itself to this constant-leap-of-faith, feast-or-famine sort of working life. There were lots of times over the past few years when I questioned whether or not all the stress and instability was worth it. The answer just kept being yes. Having friends who know how to be supportive because they are doing the same sort of thing has been super important, and learning to take breaks and recharge has also helped. Also, shout-out to my family for being the best and nerding out about everything that I do.

Do you have any sources of inspiration that are your go-to’s? Books? Online Sources? Exploring outside?

Nothing matches being outside. When we were living in Michigan and working on Intricacies, my friend Christina Mrozik and I liked to joke that the little field in front of our studio had just as much to tell us as the whole of the internet. Field guides are important too; I have a growing collection.

Keller 2 - Intricacies.jpg

Do you have advice for other young illustrators?

I don’t really feel like I should be giving other illustrators advice yet! But if I could go back and give myself advice, I would tell myself to be more fearless about tackling big, unmanageable projects. They have the biggest pay-off.

What is your idea of a “dream project”? How would you want that work to be displayed? How would it challenge you as an artist?

I day dream a bunch about working directly with scientists botanists, entomologists, ornithologists…pretty much any “-ologist” working with the natural world. I got my first taste of this as a resident artist at the Hurricane Island Foundation off the coast of Maine. There, I got to work with science educators on a series of illustrations that can be used in their programs with middle and high school students - It was so incredible! They could explain natural relationships that would take me hours or days of field-guide-reading to figure out on my own, and also made connections and raised questions that I would never have thought of. Making work that is easily reproducible is really important to me - so making work that ultimately ends up as zines, books and posters is what I usually aim for.

What projects do you have in the works?

I’m busy with a big freelance project I can’t talk about quite yet! I’m also getting ready for a show that Christina Mrozik and I are having at Antler Gallery in Portland in late November, and for the release of a coloring book called Color the Natural World that I worked on with Portland’s Timber Press! I also have a big personal project about Oregon birds that I’m preparing to dig into at the beginning of next year.

Thanks so much, Zoe!

Again, be sure to check out her work here on her website and don't miss her piece in the upcoming COSMOS exhibition!

Meet COSMOS Artist, Justine Lee Hirten

Meet Justine Lee Hirten, another talented artist that is a part of the upcoming Cosmos show! Justine is an illustrator based in Connecticut who likes to draw wolves, birds, deer, and a variety of other animals! We’re super excited to have her in this show! Go check out her website to see more of her illustrations or find her on Instagram @mangycoyote, and keep an eye out for her Equuleus piece in the upcoming Cosmos show that’s opening on October 30th!

For the COSMOS Tarot & Oracle Deck, Justine illustrated a piece for the constellation Equuleus. In the deck, it represents the Eight Card and is a Water Element.

Equuleus
Hiding From Judgement - Insecurity

The constellation Equuleus is depicted as the head of a horse peeking out from behind its neighboring constellation, Pegasus. The mythology surrounding the “horse-head” constellation involves Hippe, the daughter of the centaur Chiron. Hippe was seduced by Aeolus and became pregnant with his child. Hippe couldn’t bring herself to tell her father, Chiron, and fled to the mountains. When Chiron came looking for her, Hippe prayed to the gods that he would not find her. The gods answered by turning her into a mare. Artemis took pity and placed her into the heavens, where she still appears to be hiding, only her head visible in the constellation.

Occasionally, one may feel they need to hide parts of themselves to escape the judgment of others. People are often insecure about their unique interests, associations, or even physical attributes. Equuleus is a reminder that each individual has a place in the universe, just as they are.

Upright, Equuleus indicates that a person may be looking for a place where they can feel accepted as they are. Perhaps finding this acceptance has been especially difficult lately, or perhaps they have never been able to speak candidly about something they have wanted to speak about. There is a kind individual waiting to listen.

Reversed, this card may be sensing that the desire to be accepted by certain people or individuals is toxic. One must remember who they are, and be true to themselves, and they will find the right people.

Meet COSMOS Artist, Daniel Shaffer

Meet Daniel Shaffer, one of the many artists featured in the upcoming Cosmos show! Daniel has been in past shows at Light Grey and we’re excited to have him again on this recent one! He is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art who is known for his colorful illustrations and narrative images. He currently resides in Baltimore as a freelance illustrator. For more of Daniel’s work check out his website, daniel-shaffer.com and blog, danielhshaffer.tumblr.com and be sure to check out his Canis Major piece in the Cosmos exhibition that opens October 30th!

For the COSMOS Tarot & Oracle Deck, Daniel illustrated a piece for the constellation Canis Major. In the deck, it represents the Hermit Card and is an Earth Element.

Canis Major
The Chase - Pursuit Without Fatigue

Canis Major depicts Laelaps, a mythological dog who never failed to catch what he was hunting. Gifted to Europa by Zeus, Laelaps the dog was once used to hunt the Teumessian fox, a fox that could never be caught. Laelaps was known for his speed, loyalty, and his persistence during the chase. Zeus cast both the dog and the fox into the heavens, where the chase continues to this day.

This card is all about the pursuit of an incredible, and hard-to-attain prize. Upright, this card indicates focus, determination, stamina, and steadfastness. In some cases this is a search for knowledge and understanding, such as in the case of the Hermit. The pursuit referenced in this card is also almost always done alone and for selfish purposes, though the wisdom gained during the journey may be shared with others once the seeker deciphers its meaning.

Reversed, the prey may seem so elusive that a person may wonder if they are chasing anything at all. With any good search, one must know if and when to end the pursuit. Adjusting one’s strategy and beginning the search again after a small rest may be just enough to revitalize the hunt.

Meet COSMOS Artist, Chie Boyd

Meet Chie Boyd, another one of the many talented artists that are a part of the upcoming Cosmos show! Chie is a Bay Area native who makes colorful and cute work with a fun and playful attitude! She currently lives in San Francisco where she is making art for mobile video games. If you’d like to see more whimsical wonder you can check out Chie’s website, tinysnails.tumblr.com or find her on Instagram @tinysnails, and you can find her Auriga piece here at Light Grey in the Cosmos exhibition opening October 30th.

For the COSMOS Tarot & Oracle Deck, Chie illustrated a piece for the constellation Auriga. In the deck, it represents the King Card and is an Earth Element.

Auriga
Long hours - Complex work - Earned Accomplishment

Auriga is often thought to be the Greek hero Erichthonius, who invented the four-horse quadriga chariot. Erichthonius used his invention proudly in a battle that eventually made him King of Athens. The chariot is a symbol of majesty and power, while the goat represents abundance, sure-footedness, and hard work. Combined, there is potential for great success.

In a reading, the upright Auriga card indicates that the earnings will be equivalent to the efforts put in, and innovation will be achieved during a period of hard work. The task may be complex, but upon its completion, both the people who put forth the effort, and those that supported the task will benefit.

Reversed, this card indicates a period of long hours, late nights and the occasional setback during the completion of the work, though the meaning of the card is the same. In both the upright and the reversed meanings, the card indicates that the potential for success is present as long as there are people to put in the time to see it through to completion.

Meet COSMOS Artist, Camille Chew

Meet Camille Chew, another great artist that is featured in the upcoming Cosmos show! Camille is an illustrator based in Ithaca, New York, and is a graduate from Alfred University where she majored in Art and Design. Her work is filled with colorful patterns, masks, and fearsome witches and warriors! If you’re looking for more of Camille’s work you can hop on over to her website,camillechew.com or find her on instagram @camillechew, and you can find her Phoenix piece in the Cosmos exhibition opening October 30th!

For the COSMOS Tarot & Oracle Deck, Camille illustrated a piece for the constellation Phoenix. In the deck, it represents the World Card and is an Earth Element.

Phoenix
Transformation - Reinvention - Legacy

The constellation Phoenix is a minor constellation in the southern sky. The Phoenix has its origins in ancient Egypt, and has since been incorporated into Greek, Roman, and early Christian mythology. The concepts of infinity, cycles of life and death, resurrection, longevity, and renewal are all a part of Phoenix. Additionally, the Phoenix’s life cycle is directly tied to the element of fire, as the Phoenix dies in an outburst of flames, only to be born again from its own ashes.

In a reading, this card may symbolize a personal transformation and reinvention. This may also indicate an opportunity for an individual to set up their legacy by establishing a foundation from which others can also flourish. What a person leaves behind today will be fuel for a new generation of concepts and ideas. This card may also indicate inheritance, investments, or the sale of a business.

Reversed, it could mean that one may be caught in a bad cycle, repeating bad habits, or that elements from one’s past may continue to haunt them. This may indicate poor spending, or recurring deductions from one’s finances with no gain. It may be a good time to look at one’s resources and adjust any leaky assets.

You can find out more information about this project on the Light Grey Website and pre-order the Tarot & Oracle Deck on the Light Grey Shop here:

Boya Sun

About this card:
Scorpius (also known as Scorpio) is one of the oldest constellations in the sky. Scorpius was memorialized after killing Orion for his arrogant exclamation that he could kill all of the animals on Earth. The theme of death is not unfamiliar to Scorpius. Scorpio rules the eighth house, which is the house of death, sex and resources. Of course, none of these aspects should be taken lightly and the seriousness of a Scorpio's demeanor will reflect the things they rule over. Though it is a water sign (which would normally indicate an emotional individual) Scorpio's reserved nature makes them prone to repressing their emotions.

Scorpio is fearless, intense and passionate. They are highly competitive, a trait that comes out in both work and play. They are unafraid of taking risks and often find the thrill that comes with fighting things head-on worth a potential negative outcome. In personal matters, they prefer to see the world in black and white. Highly secretive and easily suspicious of others because of their uncanny ability to see the motives of others, they do not waste time in relationships or matters where they feel at risk or if the other party is acting ambiguously. They know what they want and aren't afraid to get it.

Artist Interview: Daniel Shaffer

Meet Daniel Shaffer. Daniel is an illustrator living and working in Baltimore, MD. Daniel is know for his colorful illustrations and narrative images. His work has been shown in various galleries and recognized by the Society of Illustrators. Daniel has participated in the BOSS RUSH! Guts, and upcoming COSMOS projects with Light Grey Art Lab, and we are thrilled to showcase his artwork! You can read all about his expriences, resources, and thougts on illustration. You can also see more of Daniel's artwork on his website and blog here!

Hi Daniel. Could you tell me about yourself?

I grew up in a city called Decatur which rests right outside of Atlanta, GA. I have really fond memories of Decatur and the neighborhood I grew up in. Decatur is lush with vegetation and tall oak trees and it smells really beautiful during the Spring and Fall. As a kid I was always using my imagination to become dinosaurs and animals, and I was interested in drawing and painting from imagination. I pretty much knew I wanted to be an artist when I was in Elementary school. After high school I attended the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) for four years and got my BFA last May. It took me a year in college to figure out that I wanted to become an illustrator.

You recently participated in the BOSS RUSH Exhibition, and much of your artwork in inspired by video games and media. Could you talk a little about your inspiration- are you attracted to the characters, story lines, bad guys, etc?

The BOSS RUSH! Exhibition was actually a turning point for me stylistically. I think once I graduated from college, I felt like I had a ticking clock behind me to get jobs so I started making a mad flurry of work. During this time I made a massive amount of experimental illustrations with shifting subject matter and style. At one point I was working completely flat and was pretty inspired by Joan Cornella's comics. I have always enjoyed gross humor so it was fun to paint a lot of butts and blood. What I really love though is color and atmosphere. I decided that my love for video games would be a good conduit for creating illustrations that pushed those two themes. When I saw the BOSS RUSH! call for artists I jumped on the opportunity because I thought it would be a good way to push myself to create a more polished piece than the illustrations I had been making prior. From there I decided to continue making movie and game related pieces because I knew that the passion was already there so all I had to do was create the image that I wanted.

Majora's Mask for BOSS RUSH!

Your work includes lots of playful characters, humorous scenarios, and dramatic moments. Could you talk a little about storytelling and image making. What is most compelling to you when creating artwork?

I grew up watching cartoons and anime so I was exposed to a lot of different ways to tell a story through images. Studio Ghibli had a really big impact on me as a developing artist and as a growing boy. The movie Princess Mononoke was a treasure trove of inspiration. In the third grade my friend rented the movie at a sleep over and I watched it for the first time. I don't think my mom would have been too happy that I had watched such a violent movie, but I couldn't stop thinking about it- I felt like it was one of the greatest creations known to man. I remember running as fast as I could through the little forest behind my school pretending I was running with wolves. So much of the world was unknown to me so I had to make up what I believed could be true. I think that's what's so compelling about making artwork. You get to create whatever you want in your own way.

Princess Mononoke

What is your favorite piece/project to date? What do you want to work on more?

I think my favorite piece that I've made was my tribute to Princess Mononoke. Not because it's dedicated to Princess Mononoke, but because it was a piece where I felt like I had unlocked something in myself that made the piece flow really well for me. It was one of the first times that developing the composition, colors, and lighting felt really natural to me and I just kind of knew what needed to be done. I definitely would like to continue doing tribute pieces, but I would also like to start working on my own children's book.

For the Guts Exhibition, you were tasked with investigating the insides of something. Could you tell us about that project, what you uncovered, and what you wanted to share?

For the Guts Exhibition I decided to choose the mythological Cosmic Turtle as my subject matter. Commonly in the mythology surrounding this creature, the turtle is swimming in space while holding a flat earth on its back that is being supported by four white elephants. Terry Pratchett actually wrote a series called Discworld that takes place on the earth that is supported by a cosmic turtle. I have yet to read the series, but it sounds really interesting. I decided to put a twist on the myth by making the action take place within the shell of a turtle creature instead of on top. I liked the idea of the shell creating a micro system of entities and foliage, while also protecting an entire universe which is represented by the white orb in the center. I thought this provided an interesting concept that could indicate an infinite number of cosmic turtles holding an infinite number of universes and how fragile this system is. It's scary and interesting to think about how the death of one Cosmic turtle could affect all the others that lie within it.

Protecting Life (Cosmic Turtle) for the Guts Exhibition

Could you describe your creative community? Locally or online? What things do you look for in a community?

At the moment I am still living in Baltimore right next to the MICA campus. I live in an apartment with artist and friend

Matt Rockefeller

. A lot of this past year has been dedicated to Matt and I working alongside each other in our in home studio. We often give each other feedback on the projects we're working on and also take breaks to go outside or play through different video games. At the end of June I am going to be moving back home in Decatur, GA to save some money. I will have lived in Baltimore for 5 years so the shift back home will be an interesting change for me. Community is still a concept that I'm learning about and take for granted. I was born with a chemical imbalance that makes my anxiety levels sky rocket pretty easily so I typically maintain a pretty small group of friends so that I'm not over stimulated. With that said, I think I need to be surrounded by an artistic community/atmosphere that share some of my core values in life. It also helps if my community is surrounded by lots of vegetation and animals! I would much prefer my view of the sky to be blocked by trees than blocked by buildings.

As an young illustrator, what is the most valuable piece of information/advise you have received?

I'm not sure if anyone ever specifically told this to me or if I just decided it was good advice on my own, but I would say the most valuable advice for me has been to just keep making work. I have only grown after making hundreds of things. The journey is often difficult and can sometimes feel hopeless, but I have found that as long as I keep producing work I will grow and improve as an artist.

Arrival

What are some of your biggest sources of inspiration? (books, media, places, games, people, etc.)

As I mentioned before, Studio Ghibli has had a profound influence on me. Beyond that I would also say that Calvin and Hobbes influenced my thinking about the world. I was introduced to Calvin and Hobbes as a little kid. My dad bought me one of the compilation books that has lots of comics in it and I was immediately hooked. I really love how Bill Watterson writes his characters. There is something that is just so charming about the world that Calvin and Hobbes live in. It always makes me happy to read his comics.

What projects do you have in the works? What direction do you see yourself going in the next year to two? Any dream projects?

I'm in a transition period at the moment, so I don't have any specific projects in the works. I have been working on a collection of zines with my friends Boya Sun and

Matt Rockefeller

that will have the work of a bunch of different artists in them. The title of the collection is Bloom, and it won't be finished for a while due to the number of zines and artists we're working with. There will be more information about that in the future though. As for my direction, I would say that I want to head into book publishing in some form. I also want to do editorial work, so I'll be building up clientele to work with in the coming months. In the future I would like to work on my own children's book. I have wanted to do that since I was a little kid. I'll be working on a story in the near future!

Thanks, Daniel!

hello@lightgreyartlab.com

Let's recreate the magic of our universe together. From all 88 constellations and astral phenomena to the planets in our own solar system... We'll light up the night!

We are looking for artists that want to look deep into the astrology, the mythology and the metaphors that have shaped our knowledge of each of these stellar bodies. Each artist will receive one of the 100 astral bodies at random and a template showing it's position in the sky. We'll cover the gallery with an incredible maze of illuminated beasts, gods, stories and legends and we'll let viewers experience the ties between what we actually see at night, and what we see in our minds eye.

And to top it all off, we will be printing a limited edition astrological oracle deck to accompany the exhibition -- where you'll learn how to chart your own astrological influences, intuit messages from the alignment of the stars, and divine wisdom from the Cosmos themselves!

We are planning all sorts of star-gazing activities leading up to the opening reception including some really incredible experiential get-togethers centered on the sky. More details about our schedule of extracurriculars will be posted soon!

So! If you'd like to be in charge of shaping our universe as we know it, put your name, links to your work and your email below by March 12th!
