Meet COSMOS Artist, Cari Corene

Meet Cari Corene, another awesome artist featured in the upcoming Cosmos show! Cari is an illustrator currently living in Baltimore, MD who loves watercolor painting!  To see more of Cari’s work take a look at her website (caricorene.com) and blog (storyofthedoor.tumblr.com) and be sure to come out and see the Hydra piece that she made for the upcoming Cosmos exhibition, opening October 30th!

For the COSMOS Tarot & Oracle Deck, Cari illustrated a piece for the constellation Hydra. In the deck, it represents the Seven Card, and is a Fire Element.

Hydra

Persevering Against Incredible Odds - Survival

The Hydra is a near-indomitable foe from Greek mythology. This immense serpent had such hopelessly poisonous breath, and blood so virulent it’s smell alone meant certain death. The creature’s most notable feature was its many vicious heads that would double each time one was lost. This vile enemy represents the presence of overwhelming odds and incredibly destructive forces. At the end of Hydra’s story, Hercules managed overcome the beast, proving that even the most daunting tasks can be overcome with strength and perseverance.

In a reading, this card is about persevering against incredible odds. It’s all about surviving, not necessarily about winning, and certainly not about conquering. If one manages to be standing at the end of the battle, they have succeeded.

Reversed, this card symbolizes poisonous circumstances, powerful enemies, and a seemingly endless battle.

Meet COSMOS Artist, Zoe Keller

Meet Zoe Keller, an illustrator and designer who graduated from Maryland Institute College of Art. She is another artist on the roster for the upcoming Cosmos show! Currently working out of Philadelphia, she uses graphite and ink to create striking and extremely detailed images. For more examples of her work be sure to swing on over to her website, zoekeller.com and blog, compassandwheel.tumblr.com or look for her on Instagram @zoekellerart, and find her rendition of the Moon Constellation in the upcoming Cosmos exhibition that opens on October 30th!

For the COSMOS Tarot & Oracle Deck, Zoe illustrated a piece for the constellation Moon. In the deck, it represents the Seventeenth Oracle Card.

Moon
Secrets - Mystery - Cycles

Since ancient times, the Moon has been associated with magic, intuition, mystery, and renewal. It is connected with female energy, related to feminine cycles, and linked to our emotional well-being. The moon has an ability to connect deeply with our psyche and our subconscious. As it quietly revolves around the Earth, the Moon’s presence can be seen with the swelling of the tides, changes in the weather, and its omniscient presence on clear, dark nights. It is quiet and omniscient, emitting a fascinating aura of mystery and power.

As a card, the Moon suggests that those who act behind the scenes can be extremely influential. It is a symbol for visible transition through it’s own cycles. It indicates the importance of dreams, subconscious yearnings, the celebration of curiosity, and the allure of the unknown. The Moon also promotes transition, finding comfort in the cycles of life.

Reversed, this card may indicate secrets, hidden agendas, or dirty dealings beneath the surface. Remember, all manner of creatures come out at night.

Meet COSMOS Artist, Justine Lee Hirten

Meet Justine Lee Hirten, another talented artist that is a part of the upcoming Cosmos show! Justine is an illustrator based in Connecticut who likes to draw wolves, birds, deer, and a variety of other animals! We’re super excited to have her in this show! Go check out her website to see more of her illustrations or find her on Instagram @mangycoyote, and keep an eye out for her Equuleus piece in the upcoming Cosmos show that’s opening on October 30th!

For the COSMOS Tarot & Oracle Deck, Justine illustrated a piece for the constellation Equuleus. In the deck, it represents the Eight Card and is a Water Element.

Equuleus
Hiding From Judgement - Insecurity

The constellation Equuleus is depicted as the head of a horse peeking out from behind its neighboring constellation, Pegasus. The mythology surrounding the “horse-head” constellation involves Hippe, the daughter of the centaur Chiron. Hippe was seduced by Aeolus and became pregnant with his child. Hippe couldn’t bring herself to tell her father, Chiron, and fled to the mountains. When Chiron came looking for her, Hippe prayed to the gods that he would not find her. The gods answered by turning her into a mare. Artemis took pity and placed her into the heavens, where she still appears to be hiding, only her head visible in the constellation.

Occasionally, one may feel they need to hide parts of themselves to escape the judgment of others. People are often insecure about their unique interests, associations, or even physical attributes. Equuleus is a reminder that each individual has a place in the universe, just as they are.

Upright, Equuleus indicates that a person may be looking for a place where they can feel accepted as they are. Perhaps finding this acceptance has been especially difficult lately, or perhaps they have never been able to speak candidly about something they have wanted to speak about. There is a kind individual waiting to listen.

Reversed, this card may be sensing that the desire to be accepted by certain people or individuals is toxic. One must remember who they are, and be true to themselves, and they will find the right people.

Meet COSMOS Artist, Daniel Shaffer

Meet Daniel Shaffer, one of the many artists featured in the upcoming Cosmos show! Daniel has been in past shows at Light Grey and we’re excited to have him again on this recent one! He is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art who is known for his colorful illustrations and narrative images. He currently resides in Baltimore as a freelance illustrator. For more of Daniel’s work check out his website, daniel-shaffer.com and blog, danielhshaffer.tumblr.com and be sure to check out his Canis Major piece in the Cosmos exhibition that opens October 30th!

For the COSMOS Tarot & Oracle Deck, Daniel illustrated a piece for the constellation Canis Major. In the deck, it represents the Hermit Card and is an Earth Element.

Canis Major
The Chase - Pursuit Without Fatigue

Canis Major depicts Laelaps, a mythological dog who never failed to catch what he was hunting. Gifted to Europa by Zeus, Laelaps the dog was once used to hunt the Teumessian fox, a fox that could never be caught. Laelaps was known for his speed, loyalty, and his persistence during the chase. Zeus cast both the dog and the fox into the heavens, where the chase continues to this day.

This card is all about the pursuit of an incredible, and hard-to-attain prize. Upright, this card indicates focus, determination, stamina, and steadfastness. In some cases this is a search for knowledge and understanding, such as in the case of the Hermit. The pursuit referenced in this card is also almost always done alone and for selfish purposes, though the wisdom gained during the journey may be shared with others once the seeker deciphers its meaning.

Reversed, the prey may seem so elusive that a person may wonder if they are chasing anything at all. With any good search, one must know if and when to end the pursuit. Adjusting one’s strategy and beginning the search again after a small rest may be just enough to revitalize the hunt.

Meet COSMOS Artist, Chie Boyd

Meet Chie Boyd, another one of the many talented artists that are a part of the upcoming Cosmos show! Chie is a Bay Area native who makes colorful and cute work with a fun and playful attitude! She currently lives in San Francisco where she is making art for mobile video games. If you’d like to see more whimsical wonder you can check out Chie’s website, tinysnails.tumblr.com or find her on Instagram @tinysnails, and you can find her Auriga piece here at Light Grey in the Cosmos exhibition opening October 30th.

For the COSMOS Tarot & Oracle Deck, Chie illustrated a piece for the constellation Auriga. In the deck, it represents the King Card and is an Earth Element.

Auriga
Long hours - Complex work - Earned Accomplishment

Auriga is often thought to be the Greek hero Erichthonius, who invented the four-horse quadriga chariot. Erichthonius used his invention proudly in a battle that eventually made him King of Athens. The chariot is a symbol of majesty and power, while the goat represents abundance, sure-footedness, and hard work. Combined, there is potential for great success.

In a reading, the upright Auriga card indicates that the earnings will be equivalent to the efforts put in, and innovation will be achieved during a period of hard work. The task may be complex, but upon its completion, both the people who put forth the effort, and those that supported the task will benefit.

Reversed, this card indicates a period of long hours, late nights and the occasional setback during the completion of the work, though the meaning of the card is the same. In both the upright and the reversed meanings, the card indicates that the potential for success is present as long as there are people to put in the time to see it through to completion.

Meet COSMOS Artist, Camille Chew

Meet Camille Chew, another great artist that is featured in the upcoming Cosmos show! Camille is an illustrator based in Ithaca, New York, and is a graduate from Alfred University where she majored in Art and Design. Her work is filled with colorful patterns, masks, and fearsome witches and warriors! If you’re looking for more of Camille’s work you can hop on over to her website,camillechew.com or find her on instagram @camillechew, and you can find her Phoenix piece in the Cosmos exhibition opening October 30th!

For the COSMOS Tarot & Oracle Deck, Camille illustrated a piece for the constellation Phoenix. In the deck, it represents the World Card and is an Earth Element.

Phoenix
Transformation - Reinvention - Legacy

The constellation Phoenix is a minor constellation in the southern sky. The Phoenix has its origins in ancient Egypt, and has since been incorporated into Greek, Roman, and early Christian mythology. The concepts of infinity, cycles of life and death, resurrection, longevity, and renewal are all a part of Phoenix. Additionally, the Phoenix’s life cycle is directly tied to the element of fire, as the Phoenix dies in an outburst of flames, only to be born again from its own ashes.

In a reading, this card may symbolize a personal transformation and reinvention. This may also indicate an opportunity for an individual to set up their legacy by establishing a foundation from which others can also flourish. What a person leaves behind today will be fuel for a new generation of concepts and ideas. This card may also indicate inheritance, investments, or the sale of a business.

Reversed, it could mean that one may be caught in a bad cycle, repeating bad habits, or that elements from one’s past may continue to haunt them. This may indicate poor spending, or recurring deductions from one’s finances with no gain. It may be a good time to look at one’s resources and adjust any leaky assets.
