Studio Self Indulgence with Sam Wolfe Connelly - Weekend Recap!

Studio Self Indulgence with Sam Wolfe Connelly Studio Self Indulgence with Sam Wolfe Connelly

We just finished a set of huge and inspiring weeks at Light Grey Art Lab! In coordination with the opening reception for Great Personality, we invited freelance, editorial, and exhibiting illustrator Sam Wolfe Connelly to teach a three-day workshop called Studio Self Indulgence!

The weekend workshop included a public artist lecture at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, a series of studio-intensive sessions, advice on practicing and professional illustration, locational brainstorming, business talks, and a guest lecture by Teagan White. Overall, the weekend was full of dynamic conversations, ideating, and a focus on each individual's art practice and aspirations.

The weekend began with the visiting artist lecture at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. In the artist talk, Sam walked through his recent work, motivations, and voice in illustration. He shared his thoughts about promoting work, navigating the line between client-based and personal work, and some of the stories and history that make their way into his pieces- creating eery, interesting, and voyeuristic narratives.

It was an informative and very entertaining start to the night! If you missed the artist talk, we just posted it to the Light Grey Podcast. You can find an audio recording of the lecture here.

Great Personality Opening Reception

After the talk, we made our way to Light Grey Art Lab for the opening reception of Great Personality, the release of the Great Personality Dating Games, and an All Creatives Meet & Greet. It was an unbelievable turnout with artists, locals, and friends, who were all gathered for the big unveil! Guests were able to mingle and meet one another while looking at all of the pinups and environments on the surrounding walls. You can see more information about the opening reception here or see all of the photographs on the Great Personality flickr set here.

The studio workshops began on Saturday morning with bagels, coffee, and tea. We gathered around the big tables to meet all of the workshop participants, get to know one another, and discus our goals and focus for the workshop and thereafter.

After a few brainstorming exercises and individual reflections, we broke into teams and began idea generating and comparing interests. Each group was given prompts to expand upon and use throughout the afternoon field trips and locational workshops.

Our first group trip was to the American Swedish Institute. There, students were invited to gather source images, sketch, and wonder through the halls of the Turnblad Mansion. The entire mansion is covered in gilded statues, giant bay windows, lookout points, bannisters, and hand-carved ornaments. It was a perfect place to sketch and work out some drawings!

We then made our way to Midtown Global Market for a lunch break and conversation. Midtown is a colorful and diverse marketplace for all types of food and goods- It is one of our favorite places for people watching and grabbing a bite to eat.

And after lunch we made our way to Northeast Minneapolis to the Bell Museum of Natural History. Here, there are tons of beautiful landscapes, dioramas, taxidermy, and carefully placed scenes for sketching and observing.

In the afternoon, we returned to Light Grey Art Lab for a lecture, presentation, and work time. And after a productive day, we settled down for a family style dinner and game night! It was a mystery themed game night that included Clue, Pandemic, Rolemodels, Who Killed Doctor Lucky, and more!

Studio Self Indulgence with Sam Wolfe Connelly Breakfast and Business Discussion

The second day of the workshop began with a Breakfast and Business Talk. We all gathered around the big tables to pool our resources! The business talk included topics of promotionals, art directors, conventions, art reps, and more. It is a content heavy and incredibly important part of the workshop!

Then Sam gave two technique-based demos. We watched Sam create a small drawing in charcoal, and then how he translated and colored his work digitally. He talked through his techniques and tips for keeping material qualities and setting certain moods.

Then we had an artist presentation by local illustrator, Teagan White. Teagan is an expert in her craft, style, and application. She shared information about what techniques and promotions have worked best for her, finding the right kind of work for her style, and her thoughts on illustration. It was an thoughtful and informative talk! You can see more of Teagan White's work here.

After our artist talks and demos, we had a full afternoon including one-on-one critiques, portfolio reviews with Sam, and group brainstorming for future projects. During the one-on-one meetings, Sam talked with each participant with their individual art goals, current projects, and questions. It was a chance to ask all of the specifics about their personal illustration work.

Groups met to talk about zine, exhibition, and project possibilities! Each group came up with a unique solution that brought together their common goals, inspirations, community, and resources.

And after a productive, inspiring, and collaborative weekend, we gathered around around for our final, farewell dinner! We had a great time talking with all of the artists and about new things on the horizon! I think we all left with a sense of possibilities and good things to come!

Thanks to everyone that participated in this weekend, attended the lecture at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, or came to the opening reception of Great Personality- this was an extremely special and community driven weekend!

Get ready to meet your match in the Great Personality Exhibition, Project, and Interactive Dating Games!

We are absolutely thrilled and proud to present Great Personality, an exhibition and project about the science of attraction, ambiance, and allure. This sultry exhibition opens next Friday, January 24th from 7:00-10:30PM. We will begin with an optional, free artist talk with Sam Wolfe Connelly (In MCAD Auditorium 150) and then make our way over to Light Grey Art Lab to see all of the gorgeous, interesting, and personality-driven pinups of the exhibition and project!

CROP_Arjun

This is not your traditional pinup show- it features a collection of illustrations and characters that are not only attractive, seductive, and fascinating, but also endearing and personable as each piece is inspired by the Myers- Briggs Personality Types. Connect with these characters and even find out more about yourself through these 16 unique personality types that are defined by life goals, energy, values, perspective, and understanding of the world around us. You can find out what your own personality type is here on the Myers-Briggs Personality Test.

CROP_Eden 2

Each of these characters is fully animatable and interactive in the Great Personality Dating Games! These are a series of four unique choose-your-own adventure games that allows you to get to know each of these characters, explore a new city, and even find love! The first game will be released at the opening reception on January 24th and available on the Great Personality Digital Gallery. There you will find the first of four games, information about the characters, teasers, trailers, and links to the online shop.

CROP_Apartment

The Great Personalty exhibition is part pinup, part environment! We selected a group of talented illustrators to create intimate interiors and beautiful landscapes- places that are date-worthy, inspiring, and built for experience. Places are directly connected to our actions, thoughts, productivity, and feelings. They often set a tone for our physical, mental, and interpersonal interactions. See all of these landscapes and intricate spaces transform how we see the spaces around us- spaces as platforms for experience, love, and romance.

CROP_street

Each place is used as a background, living room, date spot, local coffee shops, and more, in the Great Personality Dating Games. You will slowly discover each place as you get to know your new world and all of the people that reside there. The first game will be available January 24! Keep an eye out on the Light Grey Art Lab Website.

We hope to see you at the opening reception and events! We are so happy to finally share and bring this project to life!

Winter Workshop with Sam Wolfe Connelly! STUDIO SELF_INDULGENCE! JAN 24 - 26

SWConnelly_workshopposter

Great news! This January we've invited artist and illustrator Sam Wolfe Connelly to join us for a 2.5 day workshop called STUDIO SELF_INDULGENCE!

When we were thinking about who might be the perfect person to lead a workshop during the Great Personality exhibition, our minds immediately went to Sam! Sam's work skirts the border between sensual and mysterious -- dark and voyeuristic.

During the month of January will be talking about how ambiance and attitude make or break our perceptions of people and places, and we'll be taking a deeper look inside how we can add these things into our work and indulge ourselves in the process!

So if you're an artist that's looking to bridge the gap between your illustration work and your gallery practice, or if you've been more and more interested in finding ways of including the subjects you love in your professional work, this workshop is for you!

SWConnelly_image3

THE WORKSHOP:
Sam has a series of really self-indulgent, challenging, and mysterious assignments to help focus on the important aspects of defining the essential moments, language and content of your work. As we begin to define the most compelling concepts and themes for ourselves, we'll analyze the question of "How do I do more of what I love."

Participants will be guided through the refinement and development of goals for 2014 through some incredible demonstrations on technique, ideation and practice, discussions on the creative industry, portfolio development and refining one's creative identity, and a chance to learn through a guest panel of illustrators (including guest artist Teagan White!) that have been able to bridge the gap between their commercial work and their personal interests.

All of this, of course, has been curated to be a very special experience and boy, do we have fun things in store for you. The Light Grey Team has curated our dinners, extracurriculars and events with a nod to the mysterious side of art making. We'll visit incredible history-filled mansions, explore ancient relics from the past, and get absorbed in the nuances of a time long past. (Did you know Minneapolis has a speak-easy?)

Plus, Sam will be doing an incredible public lecture on the first night, followed by the opening reception of the Great Personality Exhibition!

So get ready for an incredible time!
Details about the event can be found on our shop here!
The event is open to 18 participants and is OPEN TO LOCALS AND TRAVELERS!

Light Grey in New York City

Wow! What an incredible weekend! Lindsay and Jenny just got back from New York City! We had the honor of meeting with a ton of Light Grey's past (and current!) participating artists, had the chance to teach a workshop at the Surtex and Stationary Show, we visited galleries, and did a little bit of shopping and exploring!

 LGAL_NYC2013
(Walking around Chelsea and admiring all of the skinny buildings)

We flew in on Sunday night where we moseyed around until 8pm where we hunkered down at the TKettle at St Marks Place for our New York City Meet-up. We invited artists from past shows to get together and meet in person, to share stories and meet face to face. It was amazing to see everyone in person, listen to the stories and spend some time chatting it up. It turned out to be a wonderful and welcoming night with fun stories and lots and lots of tarot card readings. We all know our fate now thanks to Jenny's three card readings with the Light Grey Tarot.

The next morning Lindsay taught a day-long workshop at the Surtex and Stationary Show on licensing for artists, surface and product design, marketing, trend research, and portfolio development. It was a lively show filled with a ton of inspirational people, things to see and products to covet. There were so many beautiful and intricate fabrics, letterpress cards, and stationery. It was really inspiring and intense. It was amazing how great everything was, and how many talented people were there this year.

We had a great time meeting with some of Lindsay's past students -- some of which had traveled all the way to Minneapolis to show at Surtex!

Between the show and our evening events we spent time visiting Artists & Fleas (which was held at the fabulous Chelsea Market!) coveting all of the fantastic hand made goodies. If you're ever in New York, definitely consider stopping by the Chelsea Market. It's an awesome place to go to see some gorgeous food, wonderful artisan objects, and really fun architecture!

We always underestimate the amount of time we spend on our feet so it was really nice to sit down with some great people that night at Buddakan in Chelsea later that night. We had some great food in an amazing atmosphere.

(Rachel Wingard, Sam Wolfe Connelly, Daniel Fishel, Jared Tuttle, Henning Koczy, and Lindsay Nohl)

On the last day we met up Annie Stoll and Grace Fong and ate Breakfast in Soho at a really cute restaurant called Cafe Gitane. We drank cappuccinos, and talked about everything from conventions, to shared friends, to how amazing the avocado sandwiches were. Best breakfast ever.

LGAL_NYC2013

We had already packed and checked out by the time we left for breakfast that morning so we were pretty nomadic for the rest of the day. One of our favorite stops was up to the Society of Illustrators where we got to see all sorts of amazing work by new illustrators! Congratulations to all of you guys that got in! We saw quite a few names we recognized (Way to go!) and a ton of great work by people we'd love to hear from some day!

Jared Tuttle, one of the Light Grey Art Lab interns and one of Lindsay's students at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, had a piece in the current show at the Society of Illustrators. It was great to visit and even cooler to see everything in person.

New York City has some of the best shopping in the world. Before we headed back to Minneapolis we made a few stops to fun stores like Evolution and Pearl River Mart in Soho, and up to ABC Carpet and Home where we coveted all of the beautiful objects and ran on a wild goose-chase around all of it's magnificent floors. Someone had let it slip that Lady Gaga was walking around the fifth floor while we were there and we had hoped to stare at her (casually, of course) -- but, no luck. Instead, we headed out for a bite to eat and a short trip back to the hotel.

LGAL_NYC2013

It was a really fantastic trip and we are so thankful for the time we spent wandering around, chatting and meeting up with everyone. It was a blast! Of course, there are a lot of great photos that we took from the meet-up and our get-togethers, so if you'd like to check them out, head to our Flickr page and you can see the rest!

Thanks, everyone for such an awesome time!
