Light Grey in New York City

Wow! What an incredible weekend! Lindsay and Jenny just got back from New York City! We had the honor of meeting with a ton of Light Grey's past (and current!) participating artists, had the chance to teach a workshop at the Surtex and Stationary Show, we visited galleries, and did a little bit of shopping and exploring!

We flew in on Sunday night where we moseyed around until 8pm where we hunkered down at the TKettle at St Marks Place for our New York City Meet-up. We invited artists from past shows to get together and meet in person, to share stories and meet face to face. It was amazing to see everyone in person, listen to the stories and spend some time chatting it up. It turned out to be a wonderful and welcoming night with fun stories and lots and lots of tarot card readings. We all know our fate now thanks to Jenny's three card readings with the Light Grey Tarot.

The next morning Lindsay taught a day-long workshop at the Surtex and Stationary Show on licensing for artists, surface and product design, marketing, trend research, and portfolio development. It was a lively show filled with a ton of inspirational people, things to see and products to covet. There were so many beautiful and intricate fabrics, letterpress cards, and stationery. It was really inspiring and intense. It was amazing how great everything was, and how many talented people were there this year.

We had a great time meeting with some of Lindsay's past students -- some of which had traveled all the way to Minneapolis to show at Surtex!

Between the show and our evening events we spent time visiting Artists & Fleas (which was held at the fabulous Chelsea Market!) coveting all of the fantastic hand made goodies. If you're ever in New York, definitely consider stopping by the Chelsea Market. It's an awesome place to go to see some gorgeous food, wonderful artisan objects, and really fun architecture!

We always underestimate the amount of time we spend on our feet so it was really nice to sit down with some great people that night at Buddakan in Chelsea later that night. We had some great food in an amazing atmosphere.

On the last day we met up Annie Stoll and Grace Fong and ate Breakfast in Soho at a really cute restaurant called Cafe Gitane. We drank cappuccinos, and talked about everything from conventions, to shared friends, to how amazing the avocado sandwiches were. Best breakfast ever.

LGAL_NYC2013

We had already packed and checked out by the time we left for breakfast that morning so we were pretty nomadic for the rest of the day. One of our favorite stops was up to the Society of Illustrators where we got to see all sorts of amazing work by new illustrators! Congratulations to all of you guys that got in! We saw quite a few names we recognized (Way to go!) and a ton of great work by people we'd love to hear from some day!

Jared Tuttle, one of the Light Grey Art Lab interns and one of Lindsay's students at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, had a piece in the current show at the Society of Illustrators. It was great to visit and even cooler to see everything in person.

New York City has some of the best shopping in the world. Before we headed back to Minneapolis we made a few stops to fun stores like Evolution and Pearl River Mart in Soho, and up to ABC Carpet and Home where we coveted all of the beautiful objects and ran on a wild goose-chase around all of it's magnificent floors. Someone had let it slip that Lady Gaga was walking around the fifth floor while we were there and we had hoped to stare at her (casually, of course) -- but, no luck. Instead, we headed out for a bite to eat and a short trip back to the hotel.

LGAL_NYC2013

It was a really fantastic trip and we are so thankful for the time we spent wandering around, chatting and meeting up with everyone. It was a blast! Of course, there are a lot of great photos that we took from the meet-up and our get-togethers, so if you'd like to check them out, head to our Flickr page and you can see the rest!

Thanks, everyone for such an awesome time!

DOWNLOADABLE Tarot Guidebook by Kelsey Dusenka

Screen shot 2012-11-30 at 7.46.52 PM

First of all it's been hard to hold this back until now, but since the last full day for the Tarot, Mystics and the Occult show was tonight, we wanted to celebrate by releasing something special.

Screen shot 2012-11-30 at 7.47.04 PM

Kelsey Dusenka, our intern over the summer, put in a lot of blood, sweat and tears into designing a comprehensive downloadable guide to the Light Grey Tarot. She's an incredibly talented designer and a wonderful person, and we were really lucky to have her join us for the short three months this summer.

Download the 40 page PDF here!

Screen shot 2012-11-30 at 7.47.14 PM

She even worked right up to the show opening date to put the finishing touches on it.
It's got a section on the meaning of numbers, several different ways to read spreads, a great comprehensive list of meanings and symbols, and a ton of other great stuff.

Screen shot 2012-11-30 at 7.47.24 PM

And it's all for you.

Screen shot 2012-11-30 at 7.47.38 PM

Please help us say a HUGE 'thank you' to Kelsey for all of her hard work in putting this together! She's fantastic!

Just a few dates to remember:
*The exhibition will be open until November 30th.
*We will be closed November 19th-24th from Thanksgiving break.
*All pick up print orders will be available after the closing of the exhibition, on December 1st.

Over the past few months I have been working on learning how to read the Light Grey Tarot. Although it was a daunting task at first, this has been a very rewarding and fun process. It has given me new perspective on what Tarot can be and how it can be used for rethinking scenarios. Below I have read one of our interns fate. Oh man, my first public tarot reading:

blogpost_anafternoonreading

Question: What is the nature of upcoming (over the holiday) family interactions?

Reading

IV of Wands by Emma Trithart

X of Wands by Roxy Polk

VI of Swords by Courtney Cashon

Right away, I notice that you have two wands in your reading. The wands suit signifies creativity, spontaneity, quick pace, and social interactions. It is a suit of quick pursuit, moments of inspirations, and new found excitement. You also have one card from the sword suit, which is representative of intelligence, calculated and thoughtful behavior, and mind over heart. This is the most powerful and dangerous of all the suits, embodying power, which comes with all the negative feelings of self-doubt, inner turmoil, and troubled decisions.

The first card in your reading is the IV of Wands. It is in the upright position, and is a card of union, togetherness, friendship, and bliss. The two figures are holding raised hands, bouquets of flowers, and are placed below a blossoming wreath. In relation to family this card is a celebration of togetherness and a reminder of all of those important people in your life. It serves as a message of good time, memories, and keeping in mind the importance family and friends.

The second card in your reading is the X of Wands. This card illustrates a person who has good intentions and is incredibly motivated, but has allowed all of their projects, ideas, work, and responsibilities to create a heavy and great burden. They are clearly struggling and having a hard time dealing will all of the sticks they have chosen picked up. This card, since it is in the reverse position, is a reminder to take tasks and responsibilities into consideration. Although you have many skills and talents, taking on too many is detrimental to your health, relationships, and future endeavors- you cannot move forward with such a troubling load. As you reunite with your family over the next few weeks, I urge you to consider what is important and what is worth sacrificing in order to grow as a person and with others.

The third card in your reading is the VI of Swords. This card in it’s suit takes place after a struggle amongst friends and colleges- you have won a battle, but your relationships are suffering. In the VI however, this is after the storm. She is peacefully and reflectively looking inward, her swords are balanced, perfectly vertical, and still, and she is in a place of transition. Usually water represents forward movement, progression, new perspective, and an upcoming journey, and in this case, represents a slow process of healing, positivity, and finding balance.

Looking at your cards together, we can see that you have a wonderful family and support system. You know that they are there for you, even through rough patches and difficulties with specific relationships. Going into the next few weeks, I am going to remind you to take all of your priorities into consideration and decide what you can carry with you on this journey and what you need to leave behind in order to make room for family, friends, and yourself. Currently and in the future, remember through the rocky times to reflect, shed unnecessary baggage, and remind yourself of your strengths, goals, and support system. Take full advantage of the time you have with them and the new found time for yourself.

Tarot Show Flier

Our upcoming show, Tarot, Mystics & The Occult, is going to be absolutely fantastic! Curated by Light Grey Art Lab's very own Lindsay Nohl, Tarot, Mystics and The Occult is a spectacular new exhibition exploring the history and symbolism of the occult revolving around the Tarot.

The opening reception is October 26th from 7-10 PM. The main event is The Light Grey Tarot, an all-new illustrated tarot deck. We've already announced the pre-order previously, but the opening will be the first time you can get your hands on the deck in person.

In addition to a gallery full of large-format prints of The Light Grey Tarot artwork, we'll have a collection of excellent art dedicated to Mystics and The Occult.

We'll have sign-ups when you enter, make sure to get yourself on the list ASAP.

And finally, we just want to let you know that the following day, Saturday October 27th, there will be the class Reading With The Light Grey Tarot from 1-2:30 PM at Light Grey Art Lab.
