The opening of Winterland was incredible! Thank you so much to all of the participating artists, both in the main show and our one-night pop-up shop! We are so happy to see all the new and familiar faces, and to see so many people making it out even in this cold weather!

We were also thrilled to have our neighbor Bingley's Teas in the gallery, demonstrating the Gongfu Cha way of making tea for anyone interested in participating. Our friends at Common Roots Café also provided a tasty tray of baked goods for refreshments.

We got to see many of our Minneapolis maker friends at the opening as well, and it was wonderful chatting with them about their products and processes!

If you were able to make it out, we hope you had as good of a time as we did! If you weren't able to stop by, the show will be up through February, and you can also find all of the participating makers' collections on the Winterland webpage.

Skate Or Die Opening Reception Recap

Skate Or Die Opening Reception
Last Friday marked the opening reception for Skate Or Die! We want to give a giant thank you to the artists involved, and to everyone who visited the gallery and made the night a huge success!
Skate Or Die Opening Reception
Skate Or Die is a celebration of death and destruction, with 60 pieces of art displayed on hardwood skateboard decks. The presentation was jaw dropping, with a gallery absolutely packed with rows and rows of glossy skateboard decks adorned with amazing artwork.
Skate Or Die Opening Reception
Designs ranged from grim and creepy, to over-the-top absurd, to outright beautiful and visitors respond to each piece with appropriate laughter or contemplation. Longtime skateboarders, horror enthusiasts, and art lovers alike all shared the gallery with a common appreciation for the love and craft that went into the Skate or Die exhibition.
Skate Or Die Opening Reception

You can view more photos from the opening reception on our Skate Or Die Flickr set. You can buy one of these beautiful skateboard decks, or a gorgeous large-scale print, on the Light Grey Art Lab shop!

Dream Arcade Opening Reception Recap

Dream Arcade Opening Reception
Dream Arcade is out, and the opening reception was a huge success! Massive thanks to everyone who made it out to the gallery to play the game! It was a loud and boisterous event (just like any good arcade always is) filled with games, food, chiptunes, laughs and more games.
Dream Arcade Opening Reception
A small crowd had gathered at the door before the event, and as we opened the door, they flooded in and instantly took to the 27 Windows Surface Pro 2 tablets mounted around the walls of the gallery, each running one of the unique Dream Arcade levels. In addition, we had Dream Arcade projected on the back wall, playable with a full-size arcade stick for those brave enough to show off their platform skills to the crowd!
Dream Arcade Opening Reception

Despite the Light Grey team having been up for the previous 40 hours putting the final touches on Dream Arcade, the event was a lively blast of retro love and we were invigorated by the passion everyone brought to the opening!

Stacks Opening Reception - Recap

Stacks Opening Reception
A huge thanks to everyone who made it out to see the Stacks opening reception! It was a wonderfully intimate evening of nostalgia, smiles, and introspection as visitors poured over each of the 60 zines featured in the gallery.

Stacks Opening Reception
It's an amazingly intimate show to take in, as each zine represents a sneak peek into the lives and mind of the artist from their chosen year, as well as the opportunity to handle the physical, hand-made pieces created by the artists themselves. There was a sense of preciousness as each visitor gingerly picked up a new zine and started reading, head bowed and eyes darting back and forth taking it all in.

Stacks Opening Reception
You can view more photos from the opening reception on our Light Grey Art Lab Flickr set, and you can buy a copy of the limited edition zines on the Light Grey shop! The participating artists each got a copy of every zine in the exhibition, so in total there are only 15 copies available of each to purchase. If there's one you want, grab it soon!

Once again, thanks again to all of the artists, collaborators, and supporters!

Rolemodels Opening Reception Recap

Rolemodels Opening Reception
Thank you to everyone who came out to the Rolemodels opening reception last Friday! It was a great kick-off to a boisterous Halloween weekend, with plenty of people coming dressed in fantasy costume, which we loved! It was awesome to finally be able to play The Battle For Vyk'Tornaahl card game with everyone, and it was made all the more special to be playing right alongside actual armor-clad, blade-wielding warriors!
Rolemodels Opening Reception
With 99 Heroes and Villains lining the walls of the main gallery, and four massive landscapes alongside full-sized cloth banners depicting the sigil of each Kingdom, as well as a giant map of the Realm of Vyk'Tornahhl, visitors had plenty to absorb. Throughout the night, people poured over the details of each piece, and stopped to read the history and backstory of their favorite characters. As an added and surreal treat, many of the participating artists came dressed as their own characters, too!
Rolemodels Opening Reception
Jenny was manning the bar pouring colorful drinks of all types. Besides a fitting set of beer (Rogue Dead Guy Ale, Warrior IPA, Magic Hat, and Ranger IPA), we offered mixed drinks like bright red Heath Elixirs, mysitcal blue Mana Potions and the dark-as-night Black Magic.
Rolemodels Opening Reception
And, of course, there was a table set up with pick-up games of our brand new card game, The Battle For Vyk'Tornaahl, being taught and played all night long. Anyone willing to learn could sit down and play a round of two of the game themselves. It was great fun, with most people getting a grip on the game after only a few minutes of explanation. I won't lie, although we were just playing to learn and have fun, a few of the games turned into fairly heated battles with plenty of smack-talk and mind games... but of course everyone was a great sport in the end!
Rolemodels Opening Reception
Again, thank you to all the artists who participated in the show, and to all of you for making it out to celebrate with us!

You can see more pictures in our Rolemodels flickr set! And as always, you can see all the work from Rolemodels exhibition on the Light Grey Art Lab website and purchases artwork from the show on the Light Grey Art Lab shop!

Rolemodels Opening Reception Friday!

Rolemodels
Whoa! Rolemodels opens this Friday, October 25th! And everyone's invited! This is an epic show filled with 100 pieces of amazing art! Not to mention we're officially launching our brand-new card game, The Battle For Vyk'Tornaahl, featuring all the artwork from the Rolemodels show!

This show has been a long time coming, and we couldn't be more excited. We've been so busy making costumes and props (and playing The Battle For Vyk'Tornaahl) that the month has flown by! But what better way to celebrate that an opening filled with art, games, food, costumes, friends and fantasy?

Rolemodels Deck Spread
This will be most people's chance to check out The Battle For Vyk'Tornaahl, and we're excited to finally be able to share it with everyone! We'll have an area to learn and try out the game at the opening, and don't worry, despite the 100 card deck and 100 page guidebook, it's actually really easy to learn. You'll be able to battle against the best of 'em in no time!

Again, the opening reception runs from 7-10 PM. We've got a lot of fun stuff lined up! Play the game, of course, but also drink some Goblin's Cure or Witch's Brew mixed drinks, and wear a costume for a chance to win free artwork or a copy of The Battle For Vyk'Tornaahl card game!

Station Zero Opening Reception

station-zero
There’s no mistaking a vintage sci-fi novel the second you pick it up from a dusty used-book bin. There’s the perfect blend of a dead serious but at-the-same-time ridiculous title. The faded cover art depicts any number of sleek spacecraft, muscular space warriors and crystal utopias towering above harsh martian landscapes. The plot synopsis is filled with names like Zarak, Trask and Arzor.

And if that feeling warms your heart and puts a smile on your face, make sure to come visit Light Grey Art Lab for the opening of Station Zero on Friday, July 19th, from 7-10 PM. It's an amazing celebration of everything sci-fi, where we asked over eighty artists to reimagine the cover art for classic sci-fi novels!

It's a fun and breezy exhibition full of smiles and laughter. Thank you to everyone who was able to make it to the show!

Although many of the artists in this show were international, it was nice to see a few of the local faces at the show, including Yin Fan Huang, and featured artist Brock Davis!

The artwork will be on display in the gallery until June 7th. All the artwork is for sale, and can be bought in person or from our online store. And as always, you can see the artwork now and forever in the gallery on at lightgreyartlab.com.

Once again, thank you to everyone who made it to the opening, and a huge thank you to Amy Ng! Be sure to stop by Pikaland and check out what's new! And say hi to Amy on twitter, let her know what you think of the show!

Have you ever said to yourself "Why didn't I think of that?" as a smile slowly spreads across your face? That was the inspiration behind our newest exhibition, SMART, which opens Friday, May 17th!

Curated by Amy Ng, founder of the delightful and charming Pikaland, SMART is a collection of clever artwork that showcases quick wit, a subtle sense of humor, and a thoughtful approach to imagery from 35 artists. You can see a full list of participating artists here!

As an added bonus, we're featuring a special collection from one of our favorite artists Brock Davis! Brock is a prolific and imaginative artist, you can see his incredible work on his site, but make sure you clear you schedule before clicking that link because you'll be there all day.

RSVP via the SMART Facebook event page!

Remember, the Opening Reception is Friday, May 27th from 7- 10 PM! We're located on the corner of Stevens Ave and 26th Street - right across from the Minneapolis College of Art & Design. Street parking is available on Stevens, 26th and 1st Ave.
