Greece Photo Recap

47689240731_2be524b275_k.jpg

In March, we took a trip with a small group of creatives to Greece, where we explored historically rich monuments, learned to throw clay from a local ceramicist, and experienced breathtaking views from atop the country’s many mountains. We recently posted photos from the adventure on our Flickr, which you can check out here!

Fairly Dark Opening Reception Recap

Thank you to everyone who came for our opening reception of Fairly Dark, a collection of solo exhibitions featuring new work from Nico Delort, Sishir Bommakanti, Natalie Hall, and Kathleen Jennings!

The night kicked off with an artist lecture by Nico Delort, who discussed his intricate and intensive scratchboard process, his inspirations, and his path as a visual artist, surrounded by the amazing work from the Fairly Dark exhibitions!

Following that, we cleared space for a massive Drink & Draw, hosted by our friends at THE VACVVM.  Visitors spent the night getting to know one another with friendly discussions, comparing sketchbooks, and cold beverages! THE VACVVM even provided a set of prizes which were raffled off during the night, and some lucky participants walked away with some amazing pieces of art!

Thanks again to all the artists who participated and to everyone who came to see us!

You can see the artwork from the Fairly Dark exhibitions on our website:

BOSS RUSH! Opening Recap

A huge thanks to everyone who made it out to the BOSS RUSH! opening reception! We had a packed house, great company, and a fun night recounting our favorite bad guys! It was an epic celebration of the 100+ pieces of artwork on the walls!

BOSS RUSH! Opening Reception

All night, guests proclaimed their love, hatred, and favorite memories from some of their cherished video games. You could hear the shock, excitement, and enthusiasm throughout the gallery! Pieces included topics from games such as Pokémon, Shadow of the Colossus, Pac Man, Street Fighter and more!

In additional to all of the physical pieces, we had an extra special interactive component, designed and created by artist Chris Schons. He displayed a Mega Man II inspired game filled with shrapnel, falling mechanical parts, and hidden details! Details and an online version will be available soon!

BOSS RUSH! Opening Reception

We also highlighted the favorites from our guest jurors to be displayed and recognized as the top ten pieces from the show! We asked Tim Turi and Ben Hanson (Game Informer), Adam May (Gearbox), and Claire Hummel (HBO) to select their top pieces from the exhibition. They selected the artwork of Miranda Meeks, Matt Rockefeller, Leonard Peng, Lydia Guadagnoli, Audrey Gonzalez, Ricardo Alvilés, Victor Maury, Chris Schons, Paul Reinwand, and Richie Pope.

Skate Or Die Opening Reception Recap

Skate Or Die Opening Reception
Last Friday marked the opening reception for Skate Or Die! We want to give a giant thank you to the artists involved, and to everyone who visited the gallery and made the night a huge success!
Skate Or Die Opening Reception
Skate Or Die is a celebration of death and destruction, with 60 pieces of art displayed on hardwood skateboard decks. The presentation was jaw dropping, with a gallery absolutely packed with rows and rows of glossy skateboard decks adorned with amazing artwork.
Skate Or Die Opening Reception
Designs ranged from grim and creepy, to over-the-top absurd, to outright beautiful and visitors respond to each piece with appropriate laughter or contemplation. Longtime skateboarders, horror enthusiasts, and art lovers alike all shared the gallery with a common appreciation for the love and craft that went into the Skate or Die exhibition.

The Omnibus Treasury Opening Reception Recap!

Omnibus Treasury Opening Reception

A huge thanks to everyone who made it out to see the opening reception for the Omnibus Treasury! We had a wonderful evening with great company, artwork, and tons of adorable jewelry! Each of the jewelry collections was hung and displayed to share it's carefully made details, clever themes, and covetable designs!

Omnibus Treasury Opening Reception

The process of creating this jewelry involves a two-step collaboration. Each artist created an iconic collection of imagery, focusing on their chosen theme, and considering shape and form. These drawings were then sent to Light Grey Art Lab where Light Grey Art Lab founder, Lindsay Nohl, hand-makes each piece, transferring the artists' work to it's final physical state, and choosing complementary findings, chain and elements.

Omnibus Treasury Opening Reception

The designs include homages to infamous space satellites, summer fruits, København Culture, underwater creatures, and more! You can see some all of the collections on the Light Grey Shop and details on the Light Grey Flickr page. You can also view all of the works and artists on the Light Grey online Gallery.

Omnibus Treasury Opening Reception

Thanks again to all of the artists, collaborators, and supporters! This is a one-of-a kind project and we are proud to make these concepts a reality!

We invited everyone in with a hot cup of cocoa, tea, treats, and drinks- it really felt cozy!

Rolemodels Opening Reception Recap

Rolemodels Opening Reception
Thank you to everyone who came out to the Rolemodels opening reception last Friday! It was a great kick-off to a boisterous Halloween weekend, with plenty of people coming dressed in fantasy costume, which we loved! It was awesome to finally be able to play The Battle For Vyk'Tornaahl card game with everyone, and it was made all the more special to be playing right alongside actual armor-clad, blade-wielding warriors!
Rolemodels Opening Reception
With 99 Heroes and Villains lining the walls of the main gallery, and four massive landscapes alongside full-sized cloth banners depicting the sigil of each Kingdom, as well as a giant map of the Realm of Vyk'Tornahhl, visitors had plenty to absorb. Throughout the night, people poured over the details of each piece, and stopped to read the history and backstory of their favorite characters. As an added and surreal treat, many of the participating artists came dressed as their own characters, too!
Rolemodels Opening Reception
Jenny was manning the bar pouring colorful drinks of all types. Besides a fitting set of beer (Rogue Dead Guy Ale, Warrior IPA, Magic Hat, and Ranger IPA), we offered mixed drinks like bright red Heath Elixirs, mysitcal blue Mana Potions and the dark-as-night Black Magic.
Rolemodels Opening Reception
And, of course, there was a table set up with pick-up games of our brand new card game, The Battle For Vyk'Tornaahl, being taught and played all night long. Anyone willing to learn could sit down and play a round of two of the game themselves. It was great fun, with most people getting a grip on the game after only a few minutes of explanation. I won't lie, although we were just playing to learn and have fun, a few of the games turned into fairly heated battles with plenty of smack-talk and mind games... but of course everyone was a great sport in the end!
Rolemodels Opening Reception
Again, thank you to all the artists who participated in the show, and to all of you for making it out to celebrate with us!

You can see more pictures in our Rolemodels flickr set! And as always, you can see all the work from Rolemodels exhibition on the Light Grey Art Lab website and purchases artwork from the show on the Light Grey Art Lab shop!

All-Night with Campbell Whyte Recap

Late last Saturday we locked 18 artists in the gallery, led by visiting artist Campbell Whyte, for the All-Night With Campbell Whyte workshop! This all night lock-in and comic workshop was an opportunity learn about Campbell's process, burn the midnight oil with other creatives, and (hopefully) finish the night with a finished 8-page comic!
All-Night With Campbell Whyte
The lock-in started at 9 pm with Campbell sharing a little about his history as an artist, the projects he's managed to continually crank out, and how he balances the ideas and projects he wants to accomplish with real-world responsibilities and obligations. After that introduction, we moved on to an idea-generating exercise to help come up with a concept for the night's project.
All-Night With Campbell Whyte
Once everyone got cranking, it was full-speed ahead as people worked through their ideas with Campbell, storyboarded their comics and got creating. The deadline was a 4 am trip to the copy-shop to make a 20 comic edition to share with the rest of the workshop participants.

Thankfully, Campbell is a charming instructor, despite the grueling hours and spirits remained high through the night. There was plentiful coffee, Glam Doll Donuts and a massive late night pizza delivery, which helped.

Right on schedule, we took a group trip into Uptown to make copies of our comics. Once printed and folded, everyone got to go home with a copy of everyone else's comic!
All-Night With Campbell Whyte
Thanks to Campbell for an awesome night! Needless to say, it was intimidating for everyone involved to start working, knowing they had such limited time. But Campbell really helped people get motivated and push through the problems. In the end, I think a lot of people were surprised to see how much they accomplished when they were on a deadline.
All-Night With Campbell Whyte
The best part (for me) was getting home and reading through a stack of comics in bed as the sun came up and the birds started chirping, and being impressed with how good they all were!
All-Night With Campbell Whyte
Congrats to everyone involved!

Nights & Weekends Opening Reception Recap

Thank you to everyone who came out to the Nights & Weekends opening reception! It was an awesome event filled with inspiring, personal, larger-than-life projects. There was a lot of work that went into the making of this show, so it was wonderful to finally open the doors and celebrate with all of you!
Nights & Weekends Opening Reception
Compared with many of our past exhibitions, Nights & Weekends was definitely an intimate affair. With so many in-depth projects, the crowd moved slowly through the gallery, flipping through artist books and zines, reading about the history and process behind each project, and pouring over the details of the 400+ pieces on display.
Nights & Weekends Opening Reception
We want to give a special shout-out to the Brooklyn-based Sketchbook Project! They stopped by Light Grey Art Lab as part of their 1703 Miles and Back Tour, and we were honored to host them! Their traveling sketchbook library was parked outside the gallery all day, where visitors could check out sketchbooks from thousands of different artists. Artists treat sketchbooks as amazingly personal and (oftentimes) secret places to work, think and create, so it's an incredible experience to have to many sketchbooks at your fingertips!
Nights & Weekends Opening Reception

Again, thank you to all the artists who participated in the show, to the sketchbook Project for sharing thier library with us, and to all of you for making it out to celebrate with us!

It is an awesome show filled with big, beautiful, inspirational posters.

It came just days after we got back from an nice, long vacation, so we needed the energy from the show to kick us back into gear. It was fun to see visitors gravitate to the posters that jived with their personal motivations, and even shared their own words of wisdom.

Make Art With Your Sweetheart Recap

Make Art with Your Sweetheart
This Thursday we celebrated Valentine's Day with Make Art With Your Sweetheart, a special event where couples could share a bottle of wine and make matching cameo portraits together.

It was a lot of fun and everyone made some great pieces! The silhouette nature of the project was meant to be playful and relaxed, and allowed couples to participate regardless of their previous experience with art.
