A Chat with Jesse Riggle
Length: 00:37:39
Synopsis: On this week's podcast, Lindsay, Chris, and Jenny sit down for a chat with artist and long-time Light Grey Art Lab contributor, Jesse Riggle. For those who don't know, Jesse spent countless hours lending a hand as we remodeled and launched Light Grey Art Lab way back in 2012. Since then, he's moved across the globe to Vienna, Austria to work for the UN. As far as we can tell, he's spent the last year climbing mountains, biking across Europe, and illustrating massive books in his free time. We talk to Jesse about fitting in in a foreign country, how we define where 'home' is, and what's up with his weird toilet.

CALL FOR ART : COSMOS

Cosmos_callforart

EDIT: 3.16.15 -- Thanks to everyone that submitted their links for this call for art! WOW! It'll take us just a bit to wade through all of the awesome entries - sit tight and we'll be announcing the final list of participating artists shortly!

CALL FOR ARTISTS!

There are 88 modern constellations in the sky, suspended amongst incredible natural phenomena that shape worlds beyond our own. Billions of people have looked up at the night sky and wondered about their place in the universe. Oracles used the stars to predict events to come and constellations became beacons that could guide travelers across uncharted territory. The night is full of glittering reminders that we may not be alone in this universe. For eons the cosmos have held great significance in countless civilizations, and in the month of September, Light Grey Art Lab will turn out the lights and look to the skies.

COSMOS
Astral Bodies, Reinterpreted
September 11
7 - 10pm

118 E. 26th Street #101
Minneapolis, MN 55404
612.239.2047
hello@lightgreyartlab.com

Let's recreate the magic of our universe together. From all 88 constellations and astral phenomena to the planets in our own solar system... We'll light up the night!

We are looking for artists that want to look deep into the astrology, the mythology and the metaphors that have shaped our knowledge of each of these stellar bodies. Each artist will receive one of the 100 astral bodies at random and a template showing it's position in the sky. We'll cover the gallery with an incredible maze of illuminated beasts, gods, stories and legends and we'll let viewers experience the ties between what we actually see at night, and what we see in our minds eye.

And to top it all off, we will be printing a limited edition astrological oracle deck to accompany the exhibition -- where you'll learn how to chart your own astrological influences, intuit messages from the alignment of the stars, and divine wisdom from the Cosmos themselves!

We are planning all sorts of star-gazing activities leading up to the opening reception including some really incredible experiential get-togethers centered on the sky. More details about our schedule of extracurriculars will be posted soon!

So! If you'd like to be in charge of shaping our universe as we know it, put your name, links to your work and your email below by March 12th!

A full participating artist list will be posted in the week following the close of the call for art and an email with dates, constellations and astral bodies and specifics about the show will be provided to everyone soon after! If you have any questions about participating, please feel free to send a note and we'd be happy to help answer your questions!

Light Grey Game Night: Feeling Lucky?

game-night-feeling-lucky
There's big money on the table. You look around and find three (foam) gun barrels pointed right at your sweaty, scheming mug. You're pretty sure the cretin with the itchy trigger finger already spent all their ammo, and you doubt the other two bozos have the guts to shoot. But that's a big gamble, and now you've gotta ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?'

Well, do ya, punk?

If you answered with a resounding 'yes!' that must mean it's time for another Light Grey Game Night! So mark your calendar for Thursday, February 19 from 6:30 - 9:30 pm!

As you might remember, we're attaching a theme to each night to help people narrow down what games they might want to bring (although you're still welcome to bring whatever you'd like!). This week's theme is games of bluffing, risk, and spectacular long shots!

See if you've got the steely reserve to last eight rounds in a massive mexican standoff in the chaotic Ca$h 'n Gun$, try to slyly outwit the sheriff and his goody two-shoes deputy in Bang! The Dice Game, or test your poker face in the biker gang classic Skull, among plenty of others! If you have a favorite boardgame, bring it!

So grab your friends, family or favorite stack of board games, and come play with us! RSVP via our Facebook event, and feel free to share! The more the merrier!

CALL FOR ART : GUTS

Guts_Callforart
A revealing new group exhibition with featured artist, Lana Crooks

CALL FOR ART!

2.27.15 EDIT : THANKS A MILLION, GUYS! WE'VE CLOSED THE CALL FOR ART AND WILL BE JURYING OVER THE NEXT COUPLE DAYS! WATCH FOR AN UPDATE SHORTLY!

GUTS
What lies within?
Opens April 17th
7 - 10pm at Light Grey Art Lab
118 E. 26th Street #101
Minneapolis, MN 55404
612.239.2047

Put on your x-ray specs and let's turn this exhibition inside out.

We are looking for artists willing to school us on the inner-workings of some of life's little mysteries...

Part exploration, part education, part evisceration -- we want to know what's really underneath the surface. So dust off your field guides, scalpels, and stay-at-home taxidermist's manuals, and join us for an exhibition that peels back the skin of all of the subjects you've ever wanted to know more about.

"How powerful is human curiosity and is it strong enough to get you to open Pandora's box?"

"What really happens to your body when you swallow a sword?"

"Who is buried in Grant's tomb?"

"What does a Midway albatross eat?"

"Where is the threshold between human and Borg, and where does my bionic grandfather lie on the spectrum?"

"How much hatred can I store in the four chambers of my heart?"

...

IN OTHER WORDS: What lies within?

Artists are encouraged to take creative liberty when helping us understand some of these incredible biological concepts. Think of it this way; if history is written by the victors, and truth is stranger than fiction, what happens when we make visual artists our surgeons, our scientists and our scholars?

During the month of April we're looking for ways to turn what we thought we knew inside out. Artists will line the walls of with "scientific findings" so intriguing, fascinating and obscure you won't know what's real and what's not? Let's leave the viewers scratching their heads.

In honor of our inside-out topic, we've invited special guest, Lana Crooks, to join us as our Featured Artist for the exhibition. With her incredible scientific sculptures and skeletal structures, she was a perfect fit for our April exhibition! She'll set the pace with imaginative pieces based, but not confined, in reality. Think of it like visual creative non-fiction.

So, whether you're interested in the bizarre skeletal structure of bats, or hypothesize about how the effects of faith often keep India's devout hindus from contracting illnesses from the sacred, but polluted, Ganges river, or if you want to help us visualize the weight of the soul, throw your name in the hat and prepare to drop some wisdom on us.

If you're interested in joining us for our GUTS, put your name, links to your portfolio and your email below by February 25. Artists will be announced the following week!

Light Grey Game Night: Building

Light Grey Game Night: Building
Aaaaaand we're back! We've been busy hammering our heads against a backlog of work, nailing down our New Year's resolutions, putting together the scaffolding for a year's worth of new exhibitions, and figuring out the tools we need to get it done!

Hmmmm, for some reason all this talk is getting me excited to play some Building games! That must mean it's time for another Light Grey Game Night! That's right, mark your calendar for Thursday, February 5th from 6:30 to 9:30 PM!

As you might remember, we're attaching a theme to each night to help people narrow down what games they might want to bring (although you're still welcome to bring whatever you'd like!). This week's theme is Building games!

Construct a sprawling collection of corridors, dungeons, and living quarters in Castles of Mad King Ludwig, kowtow to the hurried demands of your constituents as the Mayor of the quirky little town of Machi Koro, and race across the Japanese landscape laying rails and building stations in Trains, among plenty of others! If you have a favorite boardgame, bring it!

So grab your friends, family or favorite stack of board games, and come play with us! RSVP via our Facebook event, and feel free to share! The more the merrier!

In for the long haul.

static.squarespace-3
Welcome to your new office. Domino is right --- it isn't much.  The lighting sucks, the chair looks uncomfortable... and what is all this... stuff? You are pretty certain that the only reason they can call this an office is that there's a desk in here and a few pencils. Where's your computer? What time period is this? 1960?
Ah, such is the plight of the new person. You're going to be working VERY closely with Domino over the next couple months. You hear she knows the ins and outs... about a whole lot of things, including what's going on with personnel at the Museum. You get the feeling that nothing's much of a secret around her... Hopefully you don't share anything too private...
It's finals time where I teach and I had the opportunity to finish a quick background while my class had work-time. Progress is going good -- just working on a couple stories this weekend and trying to crank out a few more backgrounds. I'm going to be sad school is out after next week, but somewhat relieved that I'll get a bit more time to work on Idealists!

Cesario has a lot of work to do.

static.squarespace-2
Cesario is headed out for yet another smoke break. You both have a lot of work to do still and no matter how fast you help out around the office, you can't seem to make headway. In fact, the more you do, the more it seems like he's double-checking your work. You guess you can't blame him... he's probably under a lot of pressure.
Here's a glimpse of his office! Claire Hummel made an incredible pin-up for Cesario's end game scenarios and it was a lot of fun expanding on her original design. Look at all those books! He's got quite the office... I did a bunch of work on Cesario's spaces this past weekend. The fact that it's getting dark at four means two things -- 1. time to sit down and crank out a bunch of art and code... and 2. I've only got a couple of weeks to launch... crazy.
