THE ROBO SHOW: Call for Artists!

CALL FOR ARTISTS!

Black smoke belches from the exhaust pipes beneath greasy armored plates. Steam courses through the cylinders and the 22 pistons jerk frantically back and forth, propelling your huge mass forward down the damp cobblestone streets. Frightened eyes peek from behind sooty curtains -- the unmistakable clanging of steel can be heard from a mile away in the still night.

An old church bell tolls in the distance and a plume of bats escapes the ancient belfry. They head west, across the low blood moon and over the city walls with ease. You feel a pang of jealousy. The raids come in the night. The shells of rusting drones lay where they fell many years ago--- crumpled against the scarred old brownstones. This tired war started years ago and the resolution seems just too far beyond the realm of possibility. So these days, each able-bodied soul learns to salvage, build, and fight. Phlegm rattles in your throat and you drag your mouth across the shoulder of your wool shirt. You’re not ready.

You sit tight in the belly of this mechanical beast as it towers above the thatched roofs of the city. Your breath steams through the metal grate before your face, you step forward and poise for battle.

THE ROBO SHOW
Mechs & Mobile Suits
Opens Friday, February 12 • 7 - 10pm
Light Grey Art Lab
118 E. 26th Street #101
Minneapolis, Minnesota 55404 USA

THE CALL:
Illustrative engineers, come forth! Bring your metaphorical blueprints and show us your visionary prowess! We are looking for artists that would like to design the ultimate mech or mobile suit, armored vehicle, or cybernetic enhancements for our next exhibition: The Robo Show!

Whether your vision of the perfect Mech is something of a fighter, piloting a futuristic war machine, The Borg piloting a huge cube,  a brain piloting a large pointy-headed man in his underwear, or an ancient automaton designed by a distant culture of long ago, we want you to help us build the universe's most diverse legion of mechanical mercenaries.

What drives your technology? Is it bleeding-edge future-tech? Is it ancient? Magical? What universe? What culture? What purpose? How does it work? How do you drive it? Who could possibly pilot such a beast? We are looking for epic scenes of big robos in action, doing the things they were designed to do, or schematics, exploded components, or robo propaganda. If you want to build a mobile suit that cats can drive, so be it. If you want to draw your own personalized armored vehicle, perfect. Maybe you're inspired by genetically enhanced underwater suits? Or fancy bionics and cybernetic enhancements. We are excited to see original concepts that span the gamut of technologies, both real and imagined.

If you are interested in participating in our February Exhibition, The Robo Show, put your name, email and links to your blog or website in the comments by December 18th!

Example:

THE DETAILS:
We'll be jurying the show by Monday, December 21st, and sending out an email to all participating artists with all of the info they'll need to participate on that date! We'll also post all of the contributing artist's names on the blog as well!

SPECIFICS:
This exhibition will be a print-show featuring illustrations of all original robotic content (sorry, no pop-culture IPs for this one!) All participating artists will be asked to send a digital file of their work and we'll be printing the gallery copy for everyone for free so it is a little easier to participate! No need to send anything physical to the gallery! All participating artist details will be emailed out to everyone after the December 21st date.

If you're interested in participating, please note that all final art will be due to the gallery by January 26th, so please keep that in mind when signing up!

The show will be displayed both in our brick-and-mortar gallery in lovely (and cold) Minneapolis, Minnesota, as well as permanently archived on our gallery site for everyone that can't make it to the opening! Artists will have the option of selling work through our print-on-demand shop, and will be able to price their work as they see fit! More info will be provided to all participating artists as the call ends!

Thanks again, you guys! We are really looking forward to it!

Cosmos Opening Recap

A huge thanks to everyone who made it out to the COSMOS opening reception! We had a packed house, bright stars, and a fun night exploring the night sky! It was an amazing display with all 100 pieces artwork glowing on the walls!

DSC_0018-2.jpg

COSMOS is an artistic celebration of the 88 modern constellations that are suspended amongst incredible natural phenomena that shape worlds beyond our own! The main gallery was covered with amazing, fiber-optic lit artwork that tells the wonderful stories behind each of these 88 constellations, and the adjunct gallery was lined with the wonderful pieces that relate to the 22 Oracle cards.

Throughout the night, at half hour intervals, we turned out the lights and watched the stars shine as we embarked on star tours telling the stories hidden among the Cosmos!

COSMOS will be on display at Light Grey Art Lab through November 22nd! Stop by to take a look at all the great pieces and check out the entire collection on the Light Grey Shop. You can also view more works from the opening reception on the Light Grey Flickr page here. Thanks again and we hope to see you soon!

Artist Interview with Camille Chew

Meet Camille Chew, a freelance illustrator known for her fun color palettes, amazing masks, and the use of fantasy and occult themes.. Camille is from Ithaca, NY, and is a graduate of Alfred University where she studied Art and Design, with a concentration in Printmaking. She has also recently begun a fellowship at The Ink Shop, a printmaking studio and artist collective located in Ithaca, NY.

It's always amazing to see what Camille is going to come up with next! We have had the pleasure of working with Camille on several projects including the Skate or Die Exhibition, COSMOS Tarot & Oracle Deck, BOWER BIRD, and Omnibus Treasury among others.  We are pleased to be able to share some of her work and process in this artist interview below- you can read about her workspace, inspirations, and artistic practice. You can also find all of Camille's work on her website, blog, and instagram (@camillechew).

chew_witchseries-tarot.jpg

Your work is such a treat to look at! Where do you find most of your artistic inspiration? What about inspirations outside of art?

I am often inspired by mythology, fantasy, the occult, and of course the many artists I follow online. Outside of art, I like to look at interior design and fashion for color and pattern inspiration as well as ideas for my characters' outfits.

A lot of your work involves mystical and fantasy elements. What are some of your favorite kinds of myths or stories that inspire your art?

Growing up, I always had an interest in fairytales, fantasy, and mythology. As I've worked on building a personal fantasy world and mythology within my artwork I've specifically looked at Greek, Hindu, and Pre-Columbian mythologies.

chew_gemini.jpg

What’s your workspace like? What kind of environments do your find yourself to be most productive?

There's a studio in the back of our house with a loft that I've taken over as my workspace. I have a big desk that can usually be found covered with the remnants of previous projects, and a skylight right above me. Any well-lit, secluded room where I can sing along to some music while I work is the best environment for me to be productive.

What kind of materials do you enjoy working with?

Recently the majority of my work has been digital; illustrations drawn entirely in Photoshop. But I also enjoy traditional printmaking (which I'm excited to dive back into during my fellowship!), jewelry design, and paper crafts.

Can you tell us a bit about your process? You seem to really enjoy using pattern and decoration. How do you like to incorporate these things into your work?

Whatever I'm making, I always start by deciding on a color palette. For digital illustration, I usually don't do much sketching, maybe just a quick stick figure to map out a character's pose. All the basic shapes are blocked in and then comes the fun part- drawing in all the patterns and details. I keep a library of textures and patterns that I'm always adding to. It's full of digitally made patterns, scanned in watercolor washes and hand-drawn patterns, as well as brushes that can be used like stamps.

You’re involved in the upcoming COSMOS exhibition. Are you excited about the piece that you made for the show?

Absolutely! I completed an illustrated series of modern day witches earlier this year, one of whom was a tarot card reader, which got me interested in learning more about the subject. So when I saw LGAL was putting together a show with a tarot and oracle deck I was excited to participate. I got to illustrate the Phoenix constellation and it was fun to learn more about the mythology and try to incorporate all the symbolism into my piece.

Preview of Camille's work for the COSMOS Exhibition. You can find more details here.

Preview of Camille's work for the COSMOS Exhibition. You can find more details here.

Do you have a favorite piece of work or project that you have worked on?

A favorite project that I'm still really proud of is a series of large-scale, paper masks that were part of my senior show in college. They're constructed out of digital prints and embellished with mono-prints, paper, paint, ribbon, glitter, etc. Each one depicts a deity of my own creation, based on archetypes found in different mythologies.

http://camillechew.com/Deity-Masks

Are there any current or upcoming projects you’re working on? Do you have a dream project that you’d like to work on?

Currently I am working on an astrology series illustrating each of the signs as stylish young women. I'm also planning several series I'd like to work on during my fellowship at The Ink Shop which will end with a solo show next year. A dream project of mine would be to illustrate my own tarot deck, hopefully I'll get to that soon!

Any other thoughts or advice?

Just a thank you to LGAL for always coming up with such fun and creative ideas for shows!

Thanks again, Camille!

*And just for fun- here is a preview at Camille's process:

Meet COSMOS Artist, Adrian Majkrzak

Meet Adrian Majkrzak, another artist featured in the upcoming Cosmos show! Adrian is an illustrator and concept artist who currently works as an artist for Destiny at Bungie Studios. His work is full of science fiction influences, and incredible spaces. For more of Adrian’s work take a look at his website, www.ghostorbit.com, or on Instagram @ghostorbit, and don’t forget to check out his Sagittarius piece in the upcoming Cosmos exhibition, opening October 30th!

For the COSMOS Tarot & Oracle Deck, Adrian illustrated a piece for the constellation Sagittarius. In the deck, it represents the Fool Card, and is a Fire Element.

Sagittarius
Travel - Culture - Life Philosophy - Adventure

Sagittarius rules the ninth house, the house of philosophy. One of the most unique qualities of Sagittarius is its dual nature: half human, with an ability to reason, ideals, and a quest for knowledge, and half horse, with an insatiable wanderlust, a restless nature, and a desire for  independence. Sagittarius may wrestle with harmonizing both sides of their personality, however, those with the 9th sign are often able to find the connection that binds their contrasting personality traits through traveling and exploring new cultures. They learn how to employ their idealistic view through exploration. Sagittarius often spends time thinking about “why” and “how” things work on a grander scale, and they are not afraid to share their theories about life with anyone that will listen. Others will find it fun to brainstorm impossibly big concepts with them.

If Sagittarius appears in a reading, it is a great time for a new quest in which one may have time to reflect. This card indicates an opportunity to refresh one’s life philosophy through new experiences and travel.

When this card appears reversed, it indicates boredom with the routine, anxiety, and restlessness. A feeling of imprisonment or oppression may surface. This anxiety may manifest itself in several ways -- running from romantic commitment, stressing within a job that may seem mundane or repetitive, or even skirting responsibilities in favor of a spontaneous adventure. Shaking up routine will help satiate the desire to explore.

Meet COSMOS Artist, Cari Corene

Meet Cari Corene, another awesome artist featured in the upcoming Cosmos show! Cari is an illustrator currently living in Baltimore, MD who loves watercolor painting!  To see more of Cari’s work take a look at her website (caricorene.com) and blog (storyofthedoor.tumblr.com) and be sure to come out and see the Hydra piece that she made for the upcoming Cosmos exhibition, opening October 30th!

For the COSMOS Tarot & Oracle Deck, Cari illustrated a piece for the constellation Hydra. In the deck, it represents the Seven Card, and is a Fire Element.

Hydra

Persevering Against Incredible Odds - Survival

The Hydra is a near-indomitable foe from Greek mythology. This immense serpent had such hopelessly poisonous breath, and blood so virulent it’s smell alone meant certain death. The creature’s most notable feature was its many vicious heads that would double each time one was lost. This vile enemy represents the presence of overwhelming odds and incredibly destructive forces. At the end of Hydra’s story, Hercules managed overcome the beast, proving that even the most daunting tasks can be overcome with strength and perseverance.

In a reading, this card is about persevering against incredible odds. It’s all about surviving, not necessarily about winning, and certainly not about conquering. If one manages to be standing at the end of the battle, they have succeeded.

Reversed, this card symbolizes poisonous circumstances, powerful enemies, and a seemingly endless battle.

IT'S A NEW YEAR!!!  Our newest creative travel trip will take you deep into the Rocky Mountains where we've rented a cabin on the outskirts of the tiny mountain town, Ouray, Colorado!  Over the 5 days / 4 nights, participants will get to experience a new perspective through a mixture of creative chats, inspiring places, and the thrill of adventuring!

What better way to ring in the new year than with a couple personal "firsts!" This area is home to our favorite selection of secret winter gems such as the Ouray Ice Park, an assortment of natural Hot Springs, and the abandoned Ghost Towns of Ironton! Each day we'll visit one or two of the area's inspiring places and find plenty of time for discussing the themes of the day over hot meals and great company.

If you would like to join us for the upcoming Light Grey Art Camp to Ouray, Colorado, Submit your application here! Applications will be reviewed and accepted on a first come first serve basis, and all applications due December 1st. You can find more information about the program, travel options, and extra adventures on the Light Grey website here.
