THE ROBO SHOW: Call for Artists!

CALL FOR ARTISTS!

Black smoke belches from the exhaust pipes beneath greasy armored plates. Steam courses through the cylinders and the 22 pistons jerk frantically back and forth, propelling your huge mass forward down the damp cobblestone streets. Frightened eyes peek from behind sooty curtains -- the unmistakable clanging of steel can be heard from a mile away in the still night.

An old church bell tolls in the distance and a plume of bats escapes the ancient belfry. They head west, across the low blood moon and over the city walls with ease. You feel a pang of jealousy. The raids come in the night. The shells of rusting drones lay where they fell many years ago--- crumpled against the scarred old brownstones. This tired war started years ago and the resolution seems just too far beyond the realm of possibility. So these days, each able-bodied soul learns to salvage, build, and fight. Phlegm rattles in your throat and you drag your mouth across the shoulder of your wool shirt. You’re not ready.

You sit tight in the belly of this mechanical beast as it towers above the thatched roofs of the city. Your breath steams through the metal grate before your face, you step forward and poise for battle.

THE ROBO SHOW
Mechs & Mobile Suits
Opens Friday, February 12 • 7 - 10pm
Light Grey Art Lab
118 E. 26th Street #101
Minneapolis, Minnesota 55404 USA

THE CALL:
Illustrative engineers, come forth! Bring your metaphorical blueprints and show us your visionary prowess! We are looking for artists that would like to design the ultimate mech or mobile suit, armored vehicle, or cybernetic enhancements for our next exhibition: The Robo Show!

Whether your vision of the perfect Mech is something of a fighter, piloting a futuristic war machine, The Borg piloting a huge cube,  a brain piloting a large pointy-headed man in his underwear, or an ancient automaton designed by a distant culture of long ago, we want you to help us build the universe's most diverse legion of mechanical mercenaries.

What drives your technology? Is it bleeding-edge future-tech? Is it ancient? Magical? What universe? What culture? What purpose? How does it work? How do you drive it? Who could possibly pilot such a beast? We are looking for epic scenes of big robos in action, doing the things they were designed to do, or schematics, exploded components, or robo propaganda. If you want to build a mobile suit that cats can drive, so be it. If you want to draw your own personalized armored vehicle, perfect. Maybe you're inspired by genetically enhanced underwater suits? Or fancy bionics and cybernetic enhancements. We are excited to see original concepts that span the gamut of technologies, both real and imagined.

If you are interested in participating in our February Exhibition, The Robo Show, put your name, email and links to your blog or website in the comments by December 18th!

Example:
Lindsay Nohl
hello@lightgreyartlab.com
lindsaynohl.com

THE DETAILS:
We'll be jurying the show by Monday, December 21st, and sending out an email to all participating artists with all of the info they'll need to participate on that date! We'll also post all of the contributing artist's names on the blog as well!

SPECIFICS:
This exhibition will be a print-show featuring illustrations of all original robotic content (sorry, no pop-culture IPs for this one!) All participating artists will be asked to send a digital file of their work and we'll be printing the gallery copy for everyone for free so it is a little easier to participate! No need to send anything physical to the gallery! All participating artist details will be emailed out to everyone after the December 21st date.

If you're interested in participating, please note that all final art will be due to the gallery by January 26th, so please keep that in mind when signing up!

The show will be displayed both in our brick-and-mortar gallery in lovely (and cold) Minneapolis, Minnesota, as well as permanently archived on our gallery site for everyone that can't make it to the opening! Artists will have the option of selling work through our print-on-demand shop, and will be able to price their work as they see fit! More info will be provided to all participating artists as the call ends!

Thanks again, you guys! We are really looking forward to it!

Questions? Send us a note at hello@lightgreyartlab.com!

SKATE OR DIE: OCTOBER SHOW CALL FOR ART

Skate or Die : Skateboard Show at Light Grey Art Lab

Skate or Die
A Macabre Skateboard Exhibition
Opens October 10th
7 - 10pm

EDIT 9/6/14 --HEY! THANKS, EVERYONE, FOR PUTTING YOUR NAMES IN THE HAT FOR THIS SHOW! WE'LL BE ANNOUNCING THE FINAL LIST OF ARTISTS EARLY IN THE WEEK! CHECK BACK FOR MORE INFORMATION IN THE NEXT COUPLE DAYS!

In the late 80s/ early 90's I had a Powell Peralta. That skateboard was probably the most metal thing I've ever owned in my life. It was an old-school board, nearly as heavy as I was, and twice as thick. I could barely get it off the ground but I loved it to death. I felt like a beast when I held it, covered in bruises and scabs from practicing kickflips. I was never very good, but I still remember coveting my "I wish my boyfriend could skate" shirt, and the excitement of sending Thrasher my envelope drawings, hoping they'd get published in the next issue.

In honor of the most metal of months (October, obviously) we're hosting a new exhibition featuring your artwork gracing 7-ply Canadian Maple 'canvases'. Make it dark, make it paranormal, or make it a throwback to the good ol' days when They Live and Return of the Living Dead were our go-to movies for a Friday Night… We're looking for artists that want to join forces for a Halloween exhibition that will make you... flip.

The Skate Or Die exhibition launches just as we get our minds set on cooler weather, bonfires and creepy stories near the railroad tracks. Do you have an irrational fear of the man-eating plant from Little Shop of Horrors (Francesca does)? Or maybe a favorite scene from a slasher flick you just can't purge from your brain at night? Sorcery and hexes, superstitions, nature's bizarre and unexplained phenomena, and history's most nefarious circumstances are all fair game. Let's bring your phobias, urban legends and nightmares to life, how you dissect the project is up to you.

So put on your "time-to-die" playlist and let's get dark.

Skate or Die : Skateboard Show at Light Grey Art Lab
Lindsay Nohl's Venus Fly-trap Design on a 7ply Canadian Maple deck.

*********
We've mastered the art of making professional skate-ready decks with vibrant, detailed graphics and a sturdy finish. We'll help your work take shape in time for the exhibition by applying your work to professional grade blank decks, worthy of hanging, displaying or skating on.

The call for art ends September 5th, and we will be curating the exhibition within the following week and posting the final list of artists on the blog shortly after!

DETAILS:
Once the final participating artists are announced, each artist will need to supply a digital file of their artwork by September 26th
(sizes and specifics will be sent via email!) and will need to pay for their single blank deck at that time ($25).This deck will be shown in the brick and mortar gallery and listed for sale online for $65 (in addition to the option of purchasing prints of the graphic, which the price is determined by the artist.)
The decks will be for sale and the artists will receive $20 for each deck sold. As always, art prints are sold at a 60%/40% split in favor of the artists, and artists may price these prints however they wish! Each deck that is purchased during the exhibition will be hand crafted by the Light Grey team as ordered.
To enter the call for art, please submit your name, email and a link to your portfolio below like this:

Lindsay Nohl
hello@lightgreyartlab.com
lindsaynohl.com

We'll be sending out more specifics about the gallery exhibition and details on the show to all participating artists shortly after the closing of the call for art! But! If you have any questions, please feel free to send us a note!

Great Personality : Recap and Photos!

Great Personality Opening Reception
Gathering around the tablets for a big-screen experience!

Hey, this is Lindsay from Light Grey --
Huge thanks to everyone that came out and partied with us at the Great Personality Opening Reception!
We had quite a few people playing the games, laughing (and blushing!) and really getting into meeting the the characters and exploring the space!

This has really been one of the most interesting experiences -- from creating the game, to making a world... to just getting the chance to talk with people about the whole experience!

Great Personality Opening Reception

We were furiously coding up until the last minute -- as all great creative projects go (right!?). And once we opened the doors, a flood of people joined us for an incredibly successful opening! We had the pleasure of having guest artist Sam Wolfe Connelly join us for an artist lecture that night -- and the whole lot of us ran around, finding our types, and getting into the zone!

Great Personality Opening Reception
Becca Olene (who helped with a bunch of the animations in the game!) and Josh Olson with Sam Wolfe Connelly

Giant thanks to David Washington for helping us get some tablets for the whole experience -- and thanks to all of the wonderful people that checked in with us ONLINE! If you haven't had a chance to see what the buzz is about, we created the first of four dating sims based on the Myers Briggs Personality Types. The first story features you, a new resident in a strange city -- as you meet new people, find your way around, and have some friendly - to - sensual (!) adventures! The whole story ranges from some PG - to PG-13 moments, and for all of you dating sim-lovers out there, we have built in some really fun alternate endings, and some really funny encounters.

Each of the stories features one of the Guardian Characters (which you can see here on the site! SPOILER ALERT!)

The whole game allows you to make choices, and the choices you make will determine how compatible you are with each of the characters --- and ultimately let you see how it all plays out to your advantage - or not-so-advantage!

You can download the game HERE for free, and if you feel so generous, you can help us spread the word!
We'd love for everyone to play it!!

Great Personality Opening Reception

I had a blast coding the project and working with all of the amazing artwork. It really has been a surreal experience.
The spaces and people that were created for this project were incredible, and the stories practically wrote themselves. I owe a huge thanks to all of the creative people that put their time and effort into this project to make it a reality.

We are really excited about the prospect of doing more things like this in the future, and will be adding a page on the website that shows everyone how we did it -- so that, some day, when you have a lot of time, you can make your own dating sim, too :)

Anyway, I'd love any comments or thoughts about the game, the project, or otherwise! We really love talking with people about how it went, what they thought, and what they'd like to see from us in the future.

And I totally encourage you guys to take a look at the Flickr set where you can see the great turn-out, --- AND OF COURSE, stay tuned for the next three games (which will be coming out soon!). In these games you'll get to see more of the world, get to know some other amazing characters, have some crazy encounters and gain more of your bearings in the city while you watch the whole world unfold.

Thanks again and definitely, if you've been interested in participating in a project with us, give me a holler and tell me what you think! hello@lightgreyartlab.com

Cheers, you guys!

You Can Do It, Put Your Back Into It -- Artists Announced!

whoaSnow

SNOW. SO MUCH SNOW.
There's so much snow here in Minneapolis it's stupid.
I realize I'm not the only person in the universe that's ever complained about the weather, but COME ON snow!
Thank goodness I was writing a post about our upcoming motivational poster show, (You Can Do It) Put Your Back Into It -- because I'm going to need some serious motivation to get up out of bed in the morning and get myself to Light Grey.

If I were a wizard with the power to change snow to gold, I'd have 12" of gorgeous, unspoiled, puffy gold to trip over tomorrow.
But I digress...

Thanks to everyone that put your names down for this inspiring call for art!
As always, it was hard to narrow them down. We're excited to show just over 30 beautiful motivational posters in the main gallery for (You Can Do It) Put Your Back Into It opening on June 14th!

Thanks again to everyone and congratulations to everyone that is joining us!

Be on the look-out for the next call for art! It's happening SOON! Oh-So Soon!
If you're in the neighborhood, stop by Light Grey this Friday Night and say hi to us at the opening reception of the Macro & Micro show! The party starts at 7pm and goes til 10pm! It's chilly outside, so come on in and we'll warm you up!

Macro & Micro - Teaser 2, Specimens!

Preview Images for Light Grey Art Lab's Macro & Micro Show!

Here are a couple quick photos of some of the awesome natural elements that will be on display this Friday alongside the 90+ pieces of artwork!
These gorgeous pieces are a part of Mary Jo Hoffman's awesome specimen collection from Stillblog.net.

And stay tuned! We have a really great interview with Mary Jo coming up on Monday for our podcast.
Mary Jo was actually an aerospace engineer before she switched paths and decided to create Stillblog.net! Can you believe it? Ah, what interesting lives we lead! We got the chance to visit her at her house where she lives, works, and curates!
She's got a ton of interesting stories about her transition, what it's like to work on a year (and three month) long project, and even more stories about her travels, her findings and how Stillblog (and her appreciation for nature) has grown!

Stay tuned for the podcast and get ready for a super fun show on Friday!
Until then, stop by and see her installation (there is more than what you see here!) and her specimens, at the Macro & Micro exhibition opening this Friday from 7 - 10pm!

Official invite here!

Thanks to everyone that is helping us spread the word about the exhibition!
We can't wait to see you there!

Macro & Micro Exhibition teaser

Preview Images for Light Grey Art Lab's Macro & Micro Show!

Between the 90 pieces of work that are being hung on the wall as we speak, and the countless specimens that are being arranged for Friday's show, we are overwhelmed with science!

Don't forget that we have some awesome work that is on display this Friday at Light Grey -- just imagine -- a curated cross-section of everything from foliage, to diagrams of ecosystems, to illustrations of the northern lights!

Here is a little preview of some of the pieces I'm coveting right now :
Artwork by Bene Rohlman, Adam Tan, Hedwig Vinson, Liza Sylvestre and Shanti Rittgers.

At this moment, Jenny is also hanging the last bits of the show including the wall of amazingly beautiful documented specimens from Mary Jo Hoffman's (Founder of Stillblog.net) collection.

If you are able to make it to the show, here's the link to our facebook invite! Please feel free to share it with the world!
It's an all-ages topic, with plenty of fantastic elements to see.
If we haven't mentioned it before, we actually have something super special in store for everyone that joins us.

We are building a huge collaborative installation of hand-made bugs! If you've ever had the craving to make your own specimen, here you go. We'll have tons of papers, elements and items to glue together for our interactive entomology display.

We are really looking forward to the show and hope you can make it!
If you can't come in person, take a peek at them in all of their digital beauty here!

Thanks again!

Beautiful Forever is this Friday!

Beautiful Forever Exhibition
Yes, what could be better than being covered in a bunch of amazing art? Yes, these are photoshopped, but THINK OF THE POSSIBILITIES!

Ok Guys. I could have gone to bed, but instead I photoshopped at least one tattoo from everyone's dozens and dozens of designs onto a vacation photo of me and my friend Atom (Who has NO IDEA that he's been chosen as a model for all of these sweet designs!). Also - here's a bonus challenge! Only one of the tattoos is real! Which one is it!

But! I just wanted to say that I couldn't resist and though I should be getting ready for my tax appointment in the morning with my accountant, this was just calling to me. In fact, I was teaching at MCAD earlier this evening and after I got done with class I walked back across the street to Light Grey to find that Jenny had packaged all of the tattoos to get ready for this Friday and I snapped a couple quick photos! (Artists, don't worry! I'll make sure to take some more clear shots and send them to you before the opening so you can show them off!)

Everyone else, LOOK AT THESE BEAUTIES!

PackagedTempTattoos_BeautifulForever_sm
Oooohhhhhh

BeautifulForeverPreview_1_s
Aahhhhhhhhhh!

So don't forget! The Beautiful Forever exhibition opening reception is THIS FRIDAY from 7 - 10pm at Light Grey!
We'll have a tattoo-station where you can apply your new ink and show it off in front of the cameras. We'll make sure to get a ton of great photos!

Plus, the guys from Uptown Tattoo (In charge of the Blowout Exhibition, benefit show for Tom Strom) also just let me know that they have secured a custom tattoo gun that will be raffled off on Friday! Crazy!
It should be crazy fun and I'll be there to show off my real tattoos and my temporary ones, too! :)
Please help us spread the word!

PackagedTempTattoos_BeautifulForever__2_sm
Oh myyyyyyyyy!

Hope you guys in the Minneapolis area can join us!
Just in case, here's the official facebook invite just in case you missed it the first time!

Everyone else, we'll keep you guys posted with photos and news from the opening!
Thanks, everyone for help spreading the word!

Find all these beauties on our online shop here as well as the great work from the BLOWOUT show!

CALL FOR ART : Macro & Micro

Callforart_macroandmicro_final
Nature!

Hey! We have a new call for art! Finally!

EDIT: Thanks to everyone that submitted links to our Macro & Micro call for art!
The call for art is now closed! We'll be announcing the participants later tonight!
Thanks so much for everyone's support and interest!

There are approximately 3800 known minerals in the earth's crust, an estimated 953 thousand known animal species, and another 215 thousand plant species (not to mention another vast collection of fungi, protozoa and chromista), and the millions of things we haven't discovered yet. We read National Geographic to hear about how twenty-five percent of the life on Earth is beneath the oceans. Tectonic plates creak and crush against each other, the balance of the hydrologic cycle builds and destroys landscapes, and the wind patterns bring unexpected gifts or curses. We are holding a call for art celebrating the intricacies of our earth and all of it's spaces, relationships, weather, surprises and the intricacies of life and the lack-of on a macroscopic or microscopic level.

We are looking for everything from scientific illustrations, to airy, open landscapes. Creatures of modern day, to those from days past. Catalogues of fruit, to a traveler's journal of an antarctic exploration. What does a chinchilla skeleton look like? Symbiotic relationships may inspire you. Adaptations and exceptions or compare and contrast the different pieces of our earth. Editorial images, celebratory, and researched themes are appreciated. We're looking for a collection of artists to show us the most awe-inspiring natural phenomena you can think of and we shall display it proudly!

We will be dividing the gallery into sections, Animal, Vegetable, Mineral and 'Everything Else".

So, put on Radiolab in one ear and watch your David Attenborough documentaries in the other and join us.
If you're interested in joining us all you have to do is put your name, website / portfolio link and email below by February 15th
Along with whether your category of choice ends up as an Animal, Vegetable, Mineral or Everything Else. (This will help us plan the space and the diversity of work so others will see what you are interested in making!)

Example:
Lindsay Nohl
www.lightgreyartlab.com
hello(@)lightgreyartlab.com
I'd like to be in the Mineral or Everything Else category!

We'll be listing the final group of artists for our show by February 17th on the blog and emailing more information out to everyone after that!

The pieces will be listed on our online gallery, online shop and in our brick and mortar gallery and we shall all celebrate on opening night in Mid-April! More details about dates, deadlines and schedules and everything else will be sent to our final list of artists asap!

This call for art is open to people from all over, so please feel free to tell your friends!
If you have any questions about the theme or the call for art, please send us a note!
hello(at)lightgreyartlab.com

And - special hint! We are just putting the finishing touches on a couple other calls for art soon, so keep an eye out!

Francesca (left) and Jenny (right) working on putting up all of the didactics for the show at the last minute!

Well, it's the official count-down to the year end show at Light Grey! We're putting the finishing touches on the space and getting ready to welcome everyone to step in from out of the cold and be surrounded by ladies.

Jenny finished installing the pieces late last night and today we're all nerves!
Make sure that if you come by to remember to look around you! We're really lucky that a lot of the artists that are participating in the exhibition will be here tonight, so definitely say hello if you see the maker of one of your favorite pieces!

Here's a little preview of how the space is looking, pre-party!

The show starts at 7, so stop by if you're in town!
We'll make sure to post a fun recap of all of the nightly events so you can see how it went! Exciting! See you soon!

Preview clip of Thomas Bradley's art piece for the Expletive show. Chenille Embroidery on a Wool Ground

I have to apologize profusely for waiting this long to announce the collection of artists for the Expletive Typography Exhibition and Poster Show : Ugly words to admire. You have my permission to curse in my general direction (which would be fitting for so many reasons).

For this show in particular, we were looking for a great assortment of designers, typographers and illustrators that love type (who may or may not be particularly fond of colorful words). There's no doubt that our walls will be filled with the most beautiful dirty-words you've ever seen. So! Mark your calendar for FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 14th from 7 - 10pm.
We'll have floor-to-ceiling posters, dirty food and music that will make your grandmother disapprove.

ALSO. Do you own a piece of clothing that would fit right in with the theme of our show? If so, wear it to the opening and we'll give you a free special edition print!

Help us spread the word! More updates to come!
Thanks again to everyone that submitted your link and to all of our participating artists!

Fairytales & Florals this FRIDAY!

FairytalesAndFloralsPreview_001

We here at Light Grey Art Lab our busy setting up for our newest show, Fairytales & Florals, which will transport you to a pastel land of make-believe... We wanted to take a break to give everyone a sneak peek of some of the artwork on display!

Fairytales & Florals is a group art exhibition featuring the work of 18 magnificent artists, curated by Teagan White. Teagan has put together something magical, gathering craftsmen and artists to create a collection of work that begs you to stop and appreciate the tiniest details in some truly expressive work.

You'll find a mixture of airy drawings, pastel paintings, curious toys and dolls, and dreamily drawn figures that transform our gallery into a world that would make any 5 year old girl squeal with delight.

FairytalesAndFloralsPreview_006

Besides admiring the sugary-sweet artwork on the walls, we invite anyone and everyone to participate in our opening night craft event! We'll have tables filled with fabric, felt, embroidery floss, feathers, paper and special trinkets so you and your friends can craft your own small plush characters, paper masks, shadow puppets and pastel buntings! Once you're satisfied, get your photo taken in front of our floral photo booth with your creation or with your friends.

We'll have plenty of cookies and cupcakes on hand for those with a sweet tooth, and as you walk in you'll be beckoned to share a warm cup of tea in our lounge with Brandon Lovejoy of Verdant Tea, as he shares tea folklore stories from the tea farms of rural China.

CALL FOR ENTRIES! - Night of the Exquisite Corpse

NIGHTOFEXQUISITECORPSE_BLOG

Awesome artists Adam Hoppus and Chris Schons have cooked up a great new collaborative show and I'd love to extend the invitation to you to participate!

Night of the Exquisite Corpse is a 50 artist collaborative exhibition and project that will be featured at Light Grey Art Lab in mid-August through Mid-September!

We're looking to feature the work of 50 designers and illustrators from around the globe. The theme of this show is the undead! Each artist / designer will be asked to modify (as much or as little as you wish) a 13 x 19" blank, fully-customizable die-line (consisting of 3 parts: a basic head, torso and legs). The finished, customized pieces will be assembled into approximately 7" tall figures, exhibited and sold at our brick and mortar gallery in Minneapolis as well as in our online shop. We will also be creating a gallery online to showcase all 50 pieces for paper toy / paper craft admirers (of course, suited with links to your personal site/ blog). The die line is created in a way that allows for individuals to assemble and swap body parts with any other creature in the show. We're excited about this interactive art piece as a whole and would love to count you in!

If you are interested in participating, please leave a comment below with a link to your website or online portfolio and Adam and Chris will reach out to the lucky 50 participants with more information!
Since we're capping the amount of people at 50, we know a lot of talented, awesome people may not be able to make it this time -- but rest assured that we'll be posting more great calls for entries soon! Show us what you've got and we're excited to see your work!

If you know someone that might be interested, pass it along! We'd love for as many people as possible to be able to enter!
Thanks, in advance, and we're looking forward to making art with you!

Please comment by Sunday, June 10 if you'd like to be involved! We know that's soon, so hurry and let us know if you're interested!
Thanks!

Pokémon Battle Royale Opening!

LGAL_BattleRoyale_015

This past Friday was the opening reception for the Pokémon Battle Royale show! And it was a massive success! Hundreds of Poké-fanatics and art-lovers gathered for a night of art, food, chiptunes, giveaways and fun!

We knew the night was going to be a success when we were preparing to open the doors to the public, and found this waiting outside!

LGAL_BattleRoyale_006

And that was only the beginning! There was a steady stream of people coming all night, with the gallery filled to capacity the entire night! Everyone was in high spirits, I've never seen an artshow with more people smiling and laughing.
